Riverdale's Kinnie advances to Schooldays quarterfinals

Riverdale’s Reagan Kinnie is competing in the Tennessean/Metro Parks Schooldays tournament.

MURFREESBORO – Riverdale rising senior Reagan Kinnie advanced to match play at the Tennessean/Metro Parks Schooldays Golf Tournament on Monday, firing a 71.

Kinnie shot a 1-under par 71 at McCabe in Nashville and will play Nicole Page, who also shot 71, at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Kinnie, who is playing in the tournament for her second time in as many years, lost to Page in the second hole of a playoff a year ago.

"We grew up together," said Kinnie of Page. "We went to Erma Siegel together. She ended up moving to Brentwood."

Kinnie, who was The Daily News Journal's 2015 Girls Golfer of the Year, said she is trying not to think about the rematch.

"I'm trying to not get too excited about it," she said. "Whatever happens, happens."

Kinnie said she's happy with her play. Her iron play and putting have both improved.

Baseball all-stars chosen: Fourteen Rutherford County baseball players will participate in the fourth annual MidTN Senior All-Star Classic Saturday at Cumberland University.

The Class AAA team will play the Division II team at 10 a.m. A home run derby will be held afterward at 12:45 pm. And the Class A team will play the Class AA team at 2 p.m. Each game will be nine innings.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students or children.

Six county players were chosen for the Class AAA team. Carson Lester along with teammate Kyle Clary will represent Siegel. They will be joined on the Class AAA team by Riverdale's Drew Huff, La Vergne's Jake Hammon, Oakland's Justin Wilson and Smyrna's Camron Harper.

Siegel baseball player Carson Lester will participate in the MidTN All-Star game at Cumberland University on Saturday.

Central Magnet placed three on the Class AA game in McKenzie Jackson, Reed Sullivan and Hunter Canterbury. Central Magnet coach Jason Patterson will be an assistant for the team.

Three from Eagleville chosen for the game including pitchers Christian Hill, Matt Westberry and catcher Weston Burris. Two from MTCS — Austin Melton and Will Barham will play in it. Teammate Justin Winn was chosen for the game, but is unable to participate.

Riverdale's Dylan King and Justin Neal and Siegel's Blake Benefield were chosen, but are unable to participate. Benefield is also a finalist for the Class AAA MidTN Senior Player of the Year for Class AAA.

MTSCA All-Star game: Six former Rutherford County softball standouts will play Wednesday in the Middle Tennessee Softball Coaches Association's All-Star game at Volunteer State Community College.

Oakland's Hannah McCravy and Holly Shirey, Smyrna's Kelsey Russell and Kristen Hunsicker, Blackman's Kirstyn Cuccia and Siegel's Mackenzie McMahan all were chosen to play.

Oakland's Hannah McCravy will play in the MTSCA All-Star softball game at Volunteer State Community College today.

The first game will be played at 4 p.m. A middle school all-star game will be played at 6 p.m. with another all-star game being played at 7:30 p.m.

Oakland Middle's Caitlyn McCrary, Hailey Ellinger, Vanessa Westfall, Reagan Bogle, Sarah Margaret Lowe and Christyne Ward are in the middle school game along with Stewarts Creek Middle's Presley Leebrick.

Caitlyn McCrary, who has committed to Tennessee as an eighth-grader, will play in the MTSCA middle school all-star game Wednesday.

All-MTSCA team: Seven District 7-AAA softball players were chosen All-MTSCA first team and will be honored Wednesday between games in the MTSCA All-Star games. Oakland's Lacey Rinus and Maleia Gray were honored. Stewarts Creek's Brianna Brady and Sydney Heath, Blackman's Kirstyn Cuccia, Smyrna's Kelsey Russell and Siegel's Veronica Westfall were also honored.

Second team members included Oakland's Gracie Kirby and Hannah McCravy, Stewarts Creek's Ciera Dobbins and Loryn Sherwood, Smyrna's Kristen Hunsicker and Jalyn Mabry and Siegel's Cede Loftis.

All-MTSCA academic team: Twelve from 7-AAA were named to the All-MTSCA all-academic team. Athletes must have a 3.5 GPA or higher and be a junior or senior to receive the award.

Those honored included:

Oakland: Savannah Lee, Hannah McCravy, Peyton Perry, Abby Sargent, Holly Shirey

Stewarts Creek: Sidney Baker, Katelyn Brown, Ciera Dobbins, Alexis Samples

Blackman: Kirstyn Cuccia

Smyrna: Heather Hofferbert, Kristen Hunsicker

There were also 12 named to the all-academic team for middle school. They must have a 3.5 GPA or higher and be a seventh or eighth grader.

Oakland: Zoie Bondurant, Aimee Hall, Ashlee Jacoway, Madi Kimble, Shelby Sargent, Alaya Tibbs, Claudia Thompson, Lindsey Bell, Rachel Smith, Christyne Ward, Sophie Golliver

Stewarts Creek: McKenna Young

Burks honored: Eagleville's Kassidy Burks was named to the Tennessee Softball Coaches Association All-State team. Burks hit .364 with three doubles, two triples and two home runs for the Lady Eagles in 2015.

Owens tied for 11th: Blackman rising senior Tanner Owens, a Virginia Tech commitment, is tied for 11th after the first round of the AJGA Toyota Music City Junior. Owens shot a 1-under par 71. Knoxville's Davis Shore leads the tournament with a 5-under 67.
