Meet the members of the 2017 Commercial Appeal all-metro volleyball team.

The player of the year will be announced at the Sports Awards, which takes place June 5 at the Orpheum.

First team

Player of the year nominees

Hannah Cox/Briarcrest volleyball

Hannah Cox

Briarcrest, Sr.

Libero

Why chosen: One of the state's top liberos, Cox returned from a knee injury to lead the Saints to a 34-8 record and a runner-up spot in Division II-AA. She recorded 578 digs (13.8 per match) while serving a team-high 67 aces.

KaLea Davis/Houston volleyball

KaLea Davis

Houston, Sr.

Setter

Why chosen: Davis was the standout performer on another Houston team that advanced to the AAA state tournament. She recorded 1,040 assists and had 230 digs for a 23-17 team.

Lauren Deaton/Harding volleyball

Lauren Deaton

Harding, Sr.

Outside hitter

Why chosen: A four-year starter, Deaton led her team to a 145-48 record in that span (45-0 in district and region play), four trips to state and three straight runner-up finishes. She finished her career with 2,138 kills, which ranks sixth all-time in Tennessee. 

Carsyn Starr/Briarcrest volleyball

Carsyn Starr

Briarcrest, Jr.

Middle hitter

Why chosen: Starr was one of the key cogs as Briarcrest advanced to the Division II-AA state championship match for the second year in a row. The Mississippi State commit recorded 317 kills (48.3 kill percentage) and led the Saints with 91 blocks.

Alyiah Wells/Briarcrest volleyball

Alyiah Wells

Briarcrest, Jr.

Middle hitter

Why chosen: A repeat finalist from last year, Wells recorded 556 kills (48.3 kill percentage) and 90 blocks for the Saints, who didn't lose all year against Shelby County competition. She is committed to Alabama.

Remainder of the first team

Haley Ramsey

Tipton-Rosemark, Sr.

Utility

Why chosen: Ramsey led her team with 353 kills and 233 digs as TRA finished undefeated in district play and 29-16 overall.

Madison Stevens

Lake Cormorant, Jr.

Setter

Why chosen: Stevens earned all-state honors after leading Lake Cormorant to a 29-16 record and an MHSAA Class 2 state-title game. She recorded 807 assists, 331 digs, 149 kills and 114 aces.

Annika Thompson

St. George's, So.

Setter

Why chosen: Thompson had a terrific season for the Gryphons, totaling 748 assists, 196 kills, 104 aces and 329 digs.
