Robin Yunis and her teammate Emma Walker walked around the hallways at Rossview High School asking every nearly female athlete if she wanted to wrestle.

In the end, the duo helped recruit a team that would go on to win the Class AAA girls state championship two months ago. It's the second straight year a school from Montgomery County has captured the girls' state title, joining last year's winner, Northwest High.

"Once we got that team together we knew we were going to win state," Yunis said after capturing The Leaf-Chronicle All Area girls wrestler of the year award. "The whole goal was to win a state championship so we knew the kind of athletes we wanted to get."

Yunis, who captured her second straight state championship at 125 pounds, was able to get athletes from other sports like soccer and softball as well as recruiting some students from Rossview's ROTC program.

"We went to Sycamore High's Southern Belle tournament and we more than doubled the next closest team in terms of points to win that tournament," Yunis said. "That's when we all knew we were going to win state."

Individually, Yunis wasn't just content on winning a team state title. She wanted to dominate her opponents as well. Her goal was to either pin or earn a major decision in each match.

"I accomplished that," said Yunis, who finished the dual year 35-0.

Yunis won the region championship and her second state title and ended the year ranked seventh nationally in her weight class.

"My first goal was to go undefeated this year," Yunis said. "Then it was to pin or major every opponent. To get all of that done brought a huge smile to my face."

She also earned smiles from her biggest inspirations, her two brothers Hamza and Omar, who wrestled at Kenwood High more than five years ago.

"I learned a lot about how to compete from them, But they were never nationally ranked," Robin Yunis said laughing.
