Commercial Appeal Sports Awards presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans

Tickets are on sale for the 2018 Commercial Appeal Sports Awards presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans, recognizing the top athletic accomplishments in Memphis high school sports. It will be held June 5 at the Orpheum.

Now in its second year, the ESPY-style ceremony will feature as its guest speaker former University of Memphis and NFL standout running back DeAngelo Williams.

FIRST TEAM

Nominees for boys bowler of the year, which will be announced at the Commercial Appeal Sports Awards on June 5.

Nick Agnew, St. Benedict bowling

Nick Agnew

St. Benedict, Sr.

Why chosen: Agnew qualified for state with an average of 213.91 (fifth overall, third locally) before finishing third in his final high school tournament. He also helped the Eagles to a runner-up finish in Division II.

Ross Jenner. Collierville bowling

Collierville, Sr.

Why chosen: Jenner led the Dragons to the region championship and a state tournament berth. He was also the top local qualifier in Division I with an average of 214.63.

Jimmy Morrow, MUS

MUS, Sr.

Why chosen: Last year's Commercial Appeal bowler of the year ended his career with Search Assets a runner-up finish to Jackson Stanley of CBHS in Division II. His qualifying average of 214.29 was fourth in the state and second among local competitors.

Why chosen: Pounds was one of the key contributors as the Brothers won the Division II state championship for the fourth time. He qualified for state with an average of 209.32.

Why chosen: Smith led the local qualifiers in Division II with a 215.44 average that placed him third in the state. He then advanced to the state semifinals before being eliminated.

Jackson Stanley

CBHS, Sr.

Why chosen: Stanley was strong during the regular season (213.00 average) but saved his best for last. He defeated Jimmy Morrow of MUS to win the Division II state championship and had games of 225, 192 and 256 as the Brothers won the team title.
