Braden Stewart takes over girls soccer program at MTCS

Middle Tennessee Christian School has hired a new girls soccer coach.

Braden Stewart, who has been on the MTCS staff for a year, will take the reins of the Lady Cougars, replacing Lawrence Goodwyn.

Before coming to MTCS, Stewart was the athletic director at Ezell-Harding for two years. Before that, he spent 17 years at Northland Christian in Houston as head boys and girls soccer coach.

Stewart came to MTCS in 2017 and has assisted in cross country and boys soccer. 

Hannah Rottero will be assisting Stewart with the varsity girls soccer team. Rottero graduated from Riverdale, where she was an All-State soccer player. She also was a two-time team captain at UT Martin and a first-team All-OVC player.

Riverdale track teams win meet

Riverdale's boys and girls both won the Tomahawk Chop track meet Saturday at Riverdale.

Other area teams involved included Siegel, La Vergne, Central Magnet and Smyrna.

In boys competition, Riverdale won several events, including Michael Scruggs (100-meter dash, long jump), Demarion Sheppard (200 dash), Caleb Harney (400 dash), Grayson McPherson (3200 run), Curtis Riggins (high jump), Brandon Smith (triple jump), Maleik McAllister (shot put), 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay and 4x800 relay.

Other boys winners included Siegel's Caleb Bull (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Central Magnet's Corey Greeson (discus).

In girls competition, Riverdale got wins from Megan Miller (pole vault), Ar'Nazsia Johnson (100 dash, 200 dash), Sarah Sneed (1600 run, 3200 run), Annia Johnson (400 dash), 4x800 relay, 4x200 relay, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay.

Other girls winners included Siegel's Jania Summers (shot put, discus).

Blackman teams do well at Eastern Relays

Blackman's boys and girls competed in the Eastern Relays in Louisville over the weekend.

Tanalya Gordon helped the Lady Blaze to a ninth overall finish out of more than 60 schools. She won the long jump and was third in the 200-meter dash, fifth in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 400-meter dash.

Top Blaze individual finishers included Emilio Martin (seventh, high jump), Luke Bailey (eighth, triple jump), Charles Bennett (11th, 800 run), Jacari Cooley (13th, 300 hurdles) and Casey Clementz (14th, 800 run).

Other top Lady Blaze individual finishers included Jaclyn Wright (seventh, high jump) and Ryajiah Johnson (15th, 100 dash; 18th, 200 dash).

Siegel's Kendall D'Oliveria was sixth in the mile run while teammates Rachel Strayer (20th) and Marilyn McCarthy (21st) fared well in the 3200 meter run.

County track and field championships this week

The Rutherford County track and field championships will be held at Stewarts Creek this week.

The pole vault and triple jump events originally were scheduled for Monday, but weather has pushed them to 4:30 p.m. Thursday. 

The girls field events and running events begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The boys field events and running events begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Blackman Hall of Fame banquet 

The inaugural Blackman Athletic Hall of Fame banquet is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 17 at The Grove, 3250 Wilkinson Pike, in Murfreesboro.

A silent auction will be held at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30.
