Clarksville area's high school track stars got a chance to hold bragging rights over their competitors after Friday's Montgomery County Track and Field Championships at Rossview High.

For the seventh straight year, Northeast girls captured the title while West Creek's boys held on to their crown for another season.

With the sub-section next Friday and Saturday, here's a look at five key performers from Montgomery County.

Will West Creek sprinter's health be an issue?

Markeece Shufford has missed two of the last three track meets for the Coyotes, including Friday's competition. Shufford has posted one of the top five fastest times in the state in the 100-meter dash and will likely make it state as one of the favorites.

But with a sore quad that kept him out Friday, will he be healthy in time to make a run for state in the next two weeks?

Northeast's Henry is primed to break out

Calandra Henry felt she started the track season off slowly. That's understandable considering the weather has put consistency of competition in a tailspin.

But Henry seems focused and confident now. She breezed past the competition  Friday in the 100- and 200-meter races and anchored the 4x200 team to a victory.

Northeast's Calandra Henry breezes to the finish line in the girls 200-meter race during the Montgomery County Championships Friday at Rossview High.

She should be a major player in the sprint events the next two weeks as the competition improves drastically.

No long distance runner can catch Martin

Rossview's Sara Martin has been on fire lately. The cross country star has transitioned nicely during the track season and has completely dominated the competition in the girls 1,600- and 3,200-meter races the past month.

Rossview's Sara Martin leads the pack in the girls' 1,600-meter race during the Montgomery County Championships Friday at Rossview High.

Martin was especially impressive Friday, breaking a school (and county) record in the 3,200 with a time of 11:36.89. It was a full 18 seconds better than the previous mark. She also cruised to wins in the 1,600- and the 800-meter races.

West Creek boys still reign

Although early season talk centered around a strong Rossview track team on the boys' side, West Creek continued to show that it's still the No. 1 team in Montgomery County.

West Creek's track athletes gather in the infield prior to the start of a race during a seven-team track meet two weeks ago at Rossview High.

The Hawks and Coyotes have battled all season and Rossview was within two points of West Creek in the team standings going into Friday's final event, the 400-meter relay. But West Creek captured the win and beat Rossview by 12 points.

Who'll emerge from field events?

One viable candidate will be West Creek's Carlos Jackson, who finished in first place in  the shot put and discus and could be in a position for a state meet berth in two weeks.
