MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – T.J. Patton and Jeb Jones earned all-state performances in multiple events in leading Science Hill to a 7th place finish at the 2018 TSSAA Division I Large School Boys Track & Field Championships Thursday at Middle Tennessee State’s Dean Hayes Soccer and Track and Stadium.

Patton ran to a third-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (14.52) and a seventh-place in the 200 meters (21.96). Patton also teamed with Akshay Bakshi, Caleb Duncan and Kendall Williams for seventh place in the 4x200 meter relay (1:30.83).

Jeb Jones raced to a third-place finish in the 1600 meters (4:15.14) and an eight-place in the 800 meters (1:57.02).

Patton helped the ‘Toppers to 10 team points while Jones added seven more. The final five came from William Peterson who was fourth in the pole vault at 14-0.

Dobyns-Bennett’s Tanner Henry made it back-to-back top four finishes in the high jump. Henry was third last year and settled for a tie for fourth this year.

Coming into the competition, Henry knew decathlon state champion Jett Kinder had already cleared 6-8 last week and knew from the recent sectional that Campbell County’s Christian Shouse and Knox Halls’ Ethan Campbell were formidable competitors as well.

“I noticed pretty early that it was going to be a great day for them,” said Henry, “so I knew I had to ush through and do the best I could.”

Kinder and Shoue were through 6-4 without a miss while Brentwood’s Carter McKechnie cleared the height on a second try. Henry and Campbell needed two tries to move on.

Kinder and McKechnie were the only two over 6-6. Henry made a couple of solid attempts at the elusive mark.

“My elbow hit the bar barely on one attempt,” added Henry. “I hit my ankle on the bar at 6-4. Other than that, that jump was easily over 6-6. I know fourth place is good, but I was expecting better.”

Indian sprinter Jeamy Williams finished fifth in the 400 meters (49.34) and was sixth in the 100 meters (10.87).

“Jeamy had a solid meet,” said Dobyns-Bennett coach Bob Bingham. “He tweaked a glut hammy warming up for the 100 and although he won’t admit it, it bothered him some.”

Former Kingsport resident Stone Page was runner-up in the discus. Throwing for Franklin, the senior uncorked a toss of 160-2, but was well back of state champion Joshua Sobota of Bearden. Sobota, who also won the shot put, broke his own state meet record with a heave of 191-2.

Elsewhere, the Volunteer Falcon 4x400 relay team was on the podium with an eight-place at 3:26.94.

Brentwood won the team competition with 62 points while Cleveland was runner-up and just four shots off the pace.
