Riverdale's Michael Scruggs and West Creek's Markeece Shufford run neck and neck to the finish line during the 100 meter dash in the 2018 Large Class State Track Meet during Spring Fling on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at MTSU, in Murfreesboro. Shufford placed first and Scruggs placed second in the State Tournament.

Although a state championship eluded area boys track and field athletes in 2018, there were several outstanding performances and big seasons by some of the area's best.

The Daily News Journal's all-area boys track and field team is led by athlete of the year Michael Scruggs. The Riverdale senior finished second at state in the 100-meter dash, fourth in the 200-meter dash, 10th in the long jump and was part of the Warrior 4x100 relay team.

Other finalists for the award included Oakland senior Brady Fry and Blackman sophomore Emilio Martin.
