Rossview's Cameron Carroll is 2018 Leaf-Chronicle All Area boys soccer player of the year
Cameron Carroll never enters a high school soccer season without a few personal and team goals.
Before the 2018 boys soccer season began, Carroll had visions of becoming a more complete offensive option — one that Rossview High could rely on.
Mission accomplished.
Carroll not only became a consistent scoring threat at Rossview, he also finished the season as the District 10-AAA No. 2 goal scorer and the city's third-best player at putting the ball in the back of net.
And now the junior has been named The Leaf-Chronicle All Area boys soccer player of the year.
"I told myself that I wanted to be more aggressive this year," Carroll added. "I was too passive last year and didn't follow through on my chances (to score). I just wanted to make sure I didn't have any regrets at the end of this year."
Carroll said he went into the year with the thought of scoring 30 goals, which he admitted would be difficult with a schedule that hovers around 20-25 games. Yet Carroll was up to the task for much of the season, finishing with 26 goals and assisting on 13 more for the Hawks.
"I've gotten stronger mentally and physically," he said. "But the most important thing this year was that I was a better finisher."
And Rossview reaped those benefits. Carroll helped Rossview capture the regular-season District 13-AAA title, a Region 7-AAA championship and the program's first Class AAA sectional, which set up the school's first state soccer tournament appearance.
"We were happy to be the first team and the first for coach (Danny) Chartrand," Carroll said about the 17-year coaching veteran. "We knew we had the potential, but it was a matter of putting it together."
Rossview watched while Clarksville High won the district tournament title, but the Hawks avenged that loss with a region title victory against its rival.
"Those games (with Clarksville) are always intense," Carroll said. "That's why you love that rivalry."
After Rossview's loss to Brentwood in the Class AAA state tournament that ended the season, Carroll said he's making new goals.
"Maybe I'll shoot for 40 or 50 goals next year," he said. "If you're scoring goals then your team is hard to beat, right? That's the idea."
