ROGERSVILLE --- Cherokee showed a tendency to put points on a board in a hurry.

Trouble is, Campbell County was just a little bit better.

The visiting Cougars, who stunned the Chiefs in Jacksboro last year, made the two-hour drive a successful one, besting the host Chiefs 49-28 in a game played at Big Red Valley Friday night in the 2018 lid-lifter for both teams.

“The coaches at Campbell County do a great job of executing year in and year out with those guys. They made a lot of plays that we didn’t,” Cherokee Coach Cody Baugh said. “It was difficult to play well on offense because when you’re breaking in a new quarterback, it just makes things harder. These guys did a good job of executing and making things happen.”

Campbell County (1-0) rolled up 433 yards of total offense, including 326 passing yards by quarterback Landon Addington. He worked with pinpoint accuracy, completing 20-of-25 passes and five touchdown strikes. Four of those scoring passes were to Christian Shouse, on receptions of 8, 74, 75 and 33 yards.

In his first start at quarterback for Cherokee, senior Trey Courtney performed admirably in relief of starter Collin Trent. Courtney was 18-of-26 for 144 yards and a touchdown. He also scored a rushing touchdown on a 60-yard run.

“Trey is a very good football player and competitor,” Baugh noted. “His emotions got to him in the third quarter, but that happens early on the year. He works hard and it means a lot to him. He did a good job and stepped into a big role.

“Our guys laid it all on the line out there and we had a lot of guys in and out. This time of year, regardless of how hot it is, the emotion of the game catches up with you and there’s no way to prepare for that. Our guys got a gallon jug of water to drink on Wednesday morning. They all did it, but still guys cramped up. You can’t put a finger on emotion in the teenager body. We had a lot of guys do things the right way, but the emotion of the game got to them,” Baugh added.

The Cougars took a 14-0 lead on Shouse’s 8-yard pass reception and a 2-yard run by Drew Jordan. Sandwiched in between the scores was a Cherokee fumble on the first play from scrimmage that was recovered by the Cougars.

Cherokee stormed back to score 21 first-half points. Freshman Brayden Collins started his Chiefs’ career with a bang, scoring on a 3-yard run with 3:01 left in the first quarter. Courtney tied the game on the first quarter’s final play on a 60-yard scamper.

The Chiefs took the lead on Collins’ second touchdown, a 2-yard run. However, the Cougars struck back to tie the game with 5.8 seconds left until halftime when Addington found Devin Dukes on a 10-yard scoring reception.

Campbell County, who went to the playoffs last season, dented the scoreboard for 28 second-half points to put the game out of reach.

The Chiefs (0-1) will continue their non-conference slate Friday night, hosting former Inter-Mountain Athletic Conference foe South-Doyle at Big Red Valley.

“South-Doyle will not execute like Campbell County did,” Baugh stated. “That’s something they strive on and they do a great job at it. South-Doyle is a different type of team. They’re very talented and athletic, but I feel like that Campbell County is a lot more disciplined than South-Doyle will be. We’ll watch film and get our team prepared the best we can and get after it.”

MOBUCK MATTER: Trent, the injured Chief quarterback, hurt his ACL ligament during basketball drills earlier this summer. After surgery, Baugh noted that Trent is ahead of schedule in his recovery. Whether that means that Trent will see action later this season remains to be seen.
