Maryville starts season with a quarterback tandem in win over Catholic

It wasn't Braden Carnes' first start, but it still felt kind of like that. The Maryville quarterback started one game last year when Dylan Hopkins was hurt, so it wasn't his team. It's different when you start Week 1.

Maryville's Braden Carnes (10) hands the ball off to Maryville's DaVon Kimble (5) during a football game between Maryville and Catholic at Catholic High School in Knoxville, Tennessee on Friday, August 17, 2018.

"Of course there were some pregame jitters for the first game," Carnes said after the 31-10 win over Catholic. "I'm going to enjoy this one because it's my second varsity start and first varsity win."

Maryville's three-year starter and Knox News Football Player of the Year  Hopkins graduated. Carnes and fellow junior Cade Chambers split duties at quarterback in the  opener and will continue to do so.

"Following up Dylan, that's about as hard as it gets," Carnes said. "Learning from him was great. Coming in this week, we knew it was going to me and Cade splitting reps and I just wanted to focus on doing my best."

Carnes got more snaps on Friday, completing 14 of 17 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown, while running for 25 yards on five carries. Chambers completed 4 of  5 passes for 55 yards and rushed for 16 on six carries.

"We're not going to play two quarterbacks just because," coach Derek Hunt said. "A lot of people say if you have two quarterbacks, you don't have one. Well, in my opinion, if you don't have two ready, you're in trouble."

Maryville's Cade Chambers (9) runs through the defense during a football game between Maryville and Catholic at Catholic High School in Knoxville, Tennessee on Friday, August 17, 2018.

If one quarterback gets hot, or separates himself, Hunt will go with that one, but until then, they're playing two.

It's not a natural thing for a coach who likes to have a plan and stick to a routine, but he likes what he's seeing out of both for now. He doesn't feel either is the runner or the passer, which can be the danger in playing two quarterbacks.

"We had a few instances where we put one in for one play and switched them back," Hunt said. "It may be a good thing that we don't have a plan and keep defenses off balance."

Hunt feels both quarterbacks have a long way to go, which he expected for two players without much experience, but that Friday was a good start.

"To come out here against a really good Catholic defense, there's just a small margin of error, you can't have any mishaps," he said. "I thought at quarterback, we did a good job."

He'd like to see the offense as a whole, a unit that returns three starters, tighten up in places. They had chances to put Catholic away in the third quarter, but couldn't capitalize. They all know they're immediately in for another test with Oakland in Week 2.

It's a test all of the Rebels, but Carnes in particular, are looking forward to. The Patriots ended Maryville's 70-game regular-season win streak last year, the one game Carnes started.

He's "absolutely" looking for some vengeance.
