Five things we learned from Week 1 of high school football

This week was finally time to stop talking about high school football and starting playing some games. Some teams fit our expectations and others surprised us. Here are five takeaways from Week 1.

Don't overlook Teffeteller in the Maryville backfield

Maryville's running back tandem didn't rack up the yards in Friday's 31-10 win over Catholic — the Rebels rushed for 131 yards total — but they did score three touchdowns, and it wasn't the back with the most attention who led the way.

Bryson Teffeteller scored two touchdowns and had 54 yards on 10 carries. Tee Hodge, the junior with an offer from Tennessee, had one score and 34 yards on 10 carries.

"We all know Tee Hodge with the Tennessee offer," coach Derek Hunt said. "Bryson is a senior who waited his turn and had a great off-season. I'm excited by him."

Freshmen to watch

Catholic's Tommy Winton (24) runs through the defense during a football game between Maryville and Catholic at Catholic High School in Knoxville, Tennessee on Friday, August 17, 2018.

Catholic had to replace a lot of skill players on both sides of the ball and are playing more freshman than they have in recent years. Two, in particular, stood out as player to watch going forward in Friday's loss to Maryville.

Tommy Winton led the Fighting Irish with 92 yards on nine catches. Keondre' Jarmon only rushed for seven yards on three carries, but showed some flashes of promise.

"They should be in the mold of what we have had in the past," coach Steve Matthews said. "It's just going to take time, because they're young."

Austin-East finds its new quarterback

Austin-East's Trey Foster (6) runs the ball as Bearden's Condredge Holloway (3) tries to stop him at the KOC Kick-off Classic at Neyland Stadium, Friday, Aug. 10, 2018.

Replacing a quarterback is tough, but Trey Foster made Austin-East coach Jeff Phillip's decision easy on Friday.

In his first start at quarterback, Foster threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He also ran for 103 yards and one more touchdowns in the Roadrunners' 30-12 win over Gibbs.

"That's how you go out an put a stamp on it," said Phillips, as Foster and Kobe Wilson had been competing for the spot in preseason.

Austin-East got a good start to the season on both sides of the ball. The starting defense did not give up a score on Friday. Gibbs scored on a pick-six and then against the backups.

Week 1:Knoxville area high school football top performers

Campbell County picking up where they left off

Campbell County had one of the most prolific passing offenses last year, but had some questions after graduating their 3,000-yard quarterback and 1,000-yard receiver.

The Cougars showed no sign of slowing down on Friday with a 49-28 win over Cherokee. Landon Addington threw for 342 yards and five touchdowns. Christian had 247 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Greeneville is who we thought they were

Greeneville made a statement in its season opener, with a 43-3 win over Dobyns-Bennett.

The Greene Devils return most of last year's Class 4A state championship team and are looking to go undefeated again, though they aren't talking about it.

Cade Ballard, the 2017 Mr. Football, accounted for 429 total yards in the game. He threw for 282, more than all but three games last year, and ran for 147, better than any game last year, with six total touchdowns.
