What we learned from Week 2: Stanton Martin is back in form

Fulton's JaShaun Fenderson (2) and Shamond Morelan (3) celebrate after Fenderson scores a touchdown in the football game against Central on Thursday, August 23, 2018.

In case there were doubts after Stanton Martin's abbreviated performance in Anderson County's Week 1 blowout, the 2017 Mr. Football finalist is back in form.

Martin, who tore his ACL in the final game last season then fractured his fibula in June, put up his typical gaudy numbers on Friday night.

The senior was 24-of-30 for 319 yards and four touchdowns with one interception in the 33-20 win over William Blount.

Last year, Martin threw for 3,683 yards and 46 touchdowns last season and led the Mavericks to the state quarterfinals.

Bryce Hanley in control for Greenback

Speaking of gaudy numbers, Bryce Hanley had a career game as far as passing yards in Greenback's 63-20 win over CAK.

If the Cherokees' fate is securely in Hanley's hands with the departure of running back Breeden Gilbert, it's safe there.

The senior quarterback only completed 11 of 21 passes, but finished the night with 458 yards and seven touchdowns.

Holden Willis, Greenback caught five of those passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Seth Riddle had another five for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Blake Morton caught one 76-yard touchdown.

Hanley had a big game against CAK last year as well, with 301 yards for five touchdowns, but found a way to top those numbers this week.

Watch for Fulton's JaShaun Fenderson

JaShaun Fenderson accused PrepXtra of sleeping on him. We were watching to see what he would do. Sure enough, Fenderson stood out in Fulton's season opener Thursday.

His 88 receiving yards weren't crazy. But two touchdowns was just what Fulton needed for the 18-9 win.

One of those catches was a very nice grab on a 47-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to respond to Central's first touchdown and make it a two-score game.

Xavier Washington is dangerous in the secondary

Xavier Washington is a threat to every quarterback. Even when the Central defensive back seems out of a play, he's isn't.

At least that was the case in one instance on Thursday night, when Fulton quarterback Xavier Malone seemed to have an open receiver. Washington dove back into the ball's flight path and batted it down.

Earlier in the game, he showed some up, getting a few feet off the ground to break up another pass.

He ended up with three deflections and a sack, plus six solo tackles and three assists.

Grace Christian bounces right back

Grace Christian recovered quickly after being shut out by Alcoa in Week 1. Friday, the Rams flexed all their offensive muscles on the way to a 70-21 win over King's Academy.

Add senior quarterback Luke Kirby to the gaudy stat list. He threw for 303 yards and five touchdowns in just a quarter and a half.

The Rams spread the ball around. Grant Warwick had 97 receiving yards and two touchdowns, Eli Nordhorn had 83 yards and one score, Chandler Williams had 72 yards and one touchdown.
