5 takeaways from Week 8 of Memphis high school football
Whitehaven takes down Central
Whitehaven (6-2, 1-0 8-6A) quarterback Vincent Guy tossed three touchdowns in a 35-14 road victory over Central (6-1, 0-1). The region opener was a bit of a wake-up call for the Warriors. Both teams are off until Oct. 19. Whitehaven has a bye and Central's scheduled Saturday match-up with Hamilton was cancelled. Next up, Central hits the road to take on Germantown and Whitehaven hosts White Station.
Davidson Academy and Fayette Academy combine for 118 points
The top two teams in DII-A West put on a stunning offensive display Thursday night in Somerville as visiting Davidson Academy (7-0, 4-0) edged Fayette Academy (6-1, 3-1) 62-56. By halftime, the teams had put up a combined 75 points. Fayette Academy's Rube Scott Rhea rushed for 227 yards on 13 carries with 3 TDs.
Horn Lake and Olive Branch remain undefeated
Olive Branch (7-0) squeaked by Grenada (3-5) 13-7 Friday night in its toughest challenge since the season opener with Collierville. Next week, the Conquistadors host West Point.
Horn Lake's game was not as close as the Olive Branch game. The Eagles throttled Columbus 47-6. Oxford is next week's destination for Horn Lake.
SBA bounces back
St. Benedict (6-1) blew out Westwood (2-5) 44-6. It was a strong bounce-back showing after the Eagles were shut out by Memphis University School last week. Next week, St. Benedict will have another big test as it hosts Christian Brothers, which will be coming off of a bye-week.
Kirby keeps rolling
Kirby (7-1, 5-0 8-5A) just keeps winning. The Cougars beat Southwind (5-3, 4-1) 39-14 Friday night in what was likely the toughest game left on its regular-season schedule. Kirby's final two games are against Munford (5-3, 3-2), which Southwind beat 35-9, and Overton (1-7, 1-4).
