After 15 seasons with the Westview football program, Trey Cantrell has decided that going in a different direction is in the best interest of both parties.

Cantrell resigned on Monday after spending the past three seasons as the head coach. The Chargers went 2-8 this season and are 6-24 during his tenure.

"I have been thinking about it for a while," Cantrell said. "I have been with this program for 15 years. I came in here a young coach under Don Coady and was grateful to spend 12 seasons under him. When I took over, I knew that it was going to be an uphill battle.

"I am stepping down out of the goodness of my heart because I feel this is what is best for the program."

Cantrell said he was proud of the way the program has made improvements to the facilities, but at the end of the day, there was only one thing that mattered.

"We were not winning games," Cantrell said. "That was not from lack of effort from the kids or the coaches. The kids and coaches both showed up every day and put in the work. Fifteen years is a long time to be in one place."

Cantrell said that he had a long talk with Westview principal Jeromy Davidson among others before making this decision.

"I felt like this was the smart move," Cantrell said. "I am not leaving with any ill will toward this school or the program. This place has been nothing but good for me, and I will do anything that I can for the next coach."

Coaching is in Cantrell's blood, and that is something that he is not going to give up.

"I will move on and coach somewhere else," he said. "I will coach anything. I don't have to be a head coach. I could be a position coach somewhere."

Cantrell plans to serve out the rest of the school year as a teacher.
