KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- Often during the past 14 years, Science Hill’s claim to another Region 1 Swimming and Diving Championship was largely a foregone conclusion.

Last year, Dobyns-Bennett was able to narrow the gap and after the Indians narrowly lost a head-to-head meet earlier this season, perhaps this was the year the ‘Topper reign would sink.

Even the pre-meet heat sheets favored the Indians.

Instead, Science Hill answered the challenge and outpointed the Indians 1146½ - 1029 to win a 14th consecutive combined title.

“This is the closest one we’ve had,” said Science Hill coach Chris Coraggio. “There was no guarantee coming in. We weren’t supposed to win. But the kids saw that and came through.”

The Lady ‘Toppers also won a 14th straight title. After being defeated in that earlier meet by the Lady Indians, Science Hill was pushed again, but prevailed 573-524.

The Tribe push might have been enough had a few star swimmers not opted for a school function Saturday night instead of participating in the meet.

The Science Hill boys a little more breathing room, outpointing D-B 573½ - 505 for a 13th championship in the last 14 years.

“Every win is special,” added Coraggio. “Every one is unique. But this one is a little more special because it wasn’t a given.”

To extend its streaks, Science Hill certainly required and received strong performances from its top swimmers, who bettered five school-records in the meet.

Haley Altman broke her own school mark in winning the 100 breast in 1:04.85. Morgan Misenar bettered the 200 freestyle record with a 1:54.01 and tied the school standard in the 100 freestyle at 52.51.

Misenar and Altman teamed with Lexi Gay and Molly Bowman to set a new record in 200 medley relay of 1:51.10 and with Gay and Barnes to for a new mark of 3:40.63 in the 400 freestyle relay. Altman also touched first in the 50 free at 24.46.

Newcomers were key on the boys’ side for Science Hill. Freshman Dustin Niebauer won the 200 individual medley (2:04.06) and the 100 back (55.49) while senior transfer Landon Potter touched first in the 500 free (4:50.21) and the 200 free (1:46.66).

“Landon gets uprooted from his home because of his dad’s job,” noted Coraggio. “He not only was a talented swimmer but he bought into our program and befriended the kids and became a true part of the team.”

Potter, Niebauer, Jayden Anderson and Jonah Cathelyn teamed to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.27) while Potter, Niebauer, Luke Barnes and Nour Shams combined to place first in the 200 medley relay (1:43.05). Barnes, Shams, Anderson and Michael Miranda swam to a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.07), just three seconds behind D-B.

Shams, a senior, also stepped up to grab third in the 50 free (22.97) and the 100 free (51.47).

“Nour Shams has had a tough go some years,” added Coraggio, “but he came on and swam great his senior year.”

Science Hill’s win also came courtesy of the unexpected, like freshman Emily Beaird’s eight-place points in the 500 freestyle.

“Emily is a freshman who never saw the 500 before,” explained Coraggio. “But we put her in there and she placed.”

Beaird’s story was one of many echoed by Science Hill’s swimmers on the night.

“Each and every one I could tell you a story about why they are important and why i value them,” added Coraggio.

Even without a few of its top swimmers, by all accounts the Lady Indians had a solid night.

Grace Allen touched first in the 200 IM (2:10.80) and the 100 back (1:00.26) while, Kassidy McGuire was first in the 100 fly (58.95) and second in the 500 free (5:35.79). Dobyns-Bennett’s winning 200-freestyle relay team of McGure, Allen, Libby Russum and Ellie Hall clocked in at 1:42.89.

Hall also placed third in the 200 free (2:06.65) and the 500 free (5:56.71) while Russum came home second in the 100 free (54.03) and the 50 free (24.65).

The Dobyns-Bennett boys got a first-place from Shane Estes in the 50 free (22.23) and 100 free (48.90) as well as a first from Marcus Taylor in the 100 fly (53.84).

Dobyns-Bennett and Science Hill split the 1-meter diving portion of the meet Friday night at Viking Hall with the Hilltoppers’ Nick Van Eaton racking up 336.80 points to win the boys’ portion and Lady indian Kyndai Lane compiled 342.10 points to earn the girls’ victory.

Tennessee High was third across the board higlighted by the 1-2 finish in the boys’ breastroke from Tucker Couch (1:04.74) and Sam Bender (1:05.56).
