After colder, windy weather through much of the week, area sports teams took advantage of the warm weather Saturday, March 23, to get out and play. In Coalmont, Central High School baseball faced off against Grundy County. Over in Cleveland, Central High School soccer was back on the pitch for day two of the Cleveland Classic.Â
At the middle school level, Coffee Middle traveled to Smyrna for a matchup against Rock Springs.
CHS baseball defeats Grundy County
After a 1-5 start to the 2019 season, Central High School baseball traveled to Grundy County looking to get back on track. It was a low-scoring game, but the Red Raiders went up early and held on for a 3-2 win.Â
Early in the first inning, Skyler Bratcher doubled on a line drive to left field to send Hayden Skipper home. The next inning, CHS made it a 2-0 lead after a sacrifice fly from Gage Edwards sent Bryson Hullett in from third base.
The Yellow Jackets made it a 2-1 CHS lead later in the fourth, but the Raiders held on down the stretch for the victory.Â
CHS finished with four hits, with one each from Skipper, Hullett, Bratcher and Owen Neel. Zack Milan earned the win, finishing with four strikeouts, two runs and seven hits through five innings. Edwards and Neel both came in on relief, with Edwards surrendering two hits.Â
Raiders soccer drops two at tournament
After falling in their Friday, March 22, matchup with Loudon, Central High School boys' soccer continued tournament play Saturday, March 23 in Cleveland. Taking on Knoxville Catholic and McMinn County, the Red Raiders lost both games 1-0 and 5-2, respectively.
In the morning matchup against Knoxville, both teams went into intermission scoreless. The Fighting Irish notched the game's first goal in the second half to hand the Raiders a loss.Â
Taking on McMinn at 3 p.m., a close first half had CHS in a 2-2 tie at the break. The Cherokees took off for three more goals in the second to defeat the Raiders.Â
CMS baseball blows out Rock Springs
Coffee Middle wasted no time preserving its undefeated baseball season Saturday at Rock Springs. A nine-run first inning catapulted the Red Raiders to a 13-3 victory and improved the team to 8-0.Â
With the bases loaded early, Nolan Jernigan walked to send Dayne Crosslin in for the Raiders' first run. On the next at-bat, England Bryan hit a line drive to left field and sent Cole Pippenger and Jacob Holder home for a 3-0 lead. Adding another six runs in the first and four in the second helped CMS put the five-inning game out of reach for the Knights.
The Raiders finished with five hits, including two each from Pippenger and Holder. On the mound, Holder finished with eight strikeouts and surrendered four hits and three runs. Â
The CCMS Lady Raiders celebrated Eighth Grade Night on Monday with their eighth straight win in a 13-0 victory over Harris for a season sweep of the Eaglettes.
