All members of the Commercial Appeal All-Metro girls basketball first team are nominees for the girls basketball player of the year. The winner will be announced on May 17 at the Commercial Appeal Sports Awards presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans.

FIRST TEAM

Se'Quoia Allmond is a sophomore at Whitehaven High School

Position: Guard

Why chosen: Allmond led Whitehaven to a region title game appearance. The 5-8 guard averaged 16 points and 11 assists.

Endya Buford, Olive Branch High School - Basketball 11th

Olive Branch, Jr. 

Position: Guard

Why chosen: Buford won the Gatorade Mississippi girls basketball player of the year award and led Olive Branch to a Class 5A state title. The 5-7 guard averaged 26.3 points, 8.4 assists, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.9 steals and was named MVP of the state tournament.

Zuri Dunlap is a senior at Hernando High School

Position: Guard

Why chosen: Dunlap, a 5-7 guard, led Hernando to the Mississippi Class 6A semifinals. The Region 1-6A MVP averaged 16.4 points and 3.8 steals.

Jayla Hemingway is a senior at Houston High School

Position: Guard

Why chosen: Hemingway won the Gatorade Tennessee girls basketball player of the year award and led Houston to the Class AAA state championship game. The 5-10 Mississippi State signee averaged 22.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.2 steals, and finished as Houston's all-time leading scorer with over 2,500 points.

Position: Guard

Why chosen: James led Craigmont to a region quarterfinal appearance. The 5-8 guard averaged 21.6 points and 5.5 assists.

Antonika Jones, Douglas High School - Basketball 12th

Douglass, Sr. 

Position: Guard

Why chosen: Jones emerged as a prolific scorer for Douglass, averaging 27 points.  The 5-9 guard also scored 57 points in a Jan. 24 win over MASE.

Amara McKay, Northpoint Christian School - Basketball 12th

Position: Center

Why chosen: McKay, a 5-11 center, led Northpoint to the DII-A semifinals. The district co-MVP averaged 19.6 points and 8.9 rebounds.

Position: Forward

Why chosen: Williams led Arlington to its second state tournament appearance. The 6-4 Memphis signee averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 blocks.
