Using a balanced scoring attack that saw five different players score multiple goals, GPS defeated Farragut High School 18-4 in varsity lacrosse action at GPS. The loss was the first of the season for the Admirals against an in-state opponent and dropped their overall record to 7-2. GPS won their 12th game of the season with a clash against top-ranked Harpeth Hall on the horizon next week.
After Farragut drew first blood in the game with an unassisted goal, GPS responded with six unanswered from six different players.
Senior Caitlin O’Brien scored the opener for the Bruisers off a feed from Evie Jackson to tie the score at one. Anna Beth Coffman then scored from a free position at the 19:02 mark of the first half. Coffman would assist on the next two goals, one by Alex Center and another by Jackson. When Ada Pratt scored her first of four goals on the day on a free position with 11:48 on the clock, the Bruisers had begun to assert their dominance on the field.
GPS controlled the draws and midfield possession throughout the game. Both O’Brien and Reagan Ziegler ended the day with seven draw controls each. The midfield duo would actually connect on a goal in the closing seconds of the first half as the senior fed Ziegler along the crease for a goal just before the first half buzzer sounded. The Bruisers led 10-2 at the break.
In the second half, GPS stepped up their presence in the midfield and on defense as Farragut only had four shots on goal in the final 25 minutes of play. Jackson scored back-to-back goals to push the advantage to 13-2 with 18:15 on the clock. Following a pair of Admiral goals, Pratt would score two more on free position shots to push the lead back above 10 goals. Ziegler ended the scoring for GPS with an unassisted strike with 5:48 left to play.
Junior Maggie Kay Imorde was a commanding force on defense throughout the game and finished with a season-high seven ground balls. Kenzie Grisar, Jessie Salisbury, CJ Polk, and Abi Austin also turned in solid defensive performances for the home squad. GPS’s 9th grade goalie Savannah Stout continued her recent strong play with five saves on the afternoon.
The Bruisers next opponent will be #1 ranked Harpeth Hall next Thursday on the road. Farragut’s next opposition will be Gatlinburg-Pittman on the road on Tuesday.
