MLB All-Star Game includes four with Nashville-area ties
Four major league players with ties to the Nashville area were selected to the All-Star Game scheduled for Tuesday in Cleveland.
The game is set for 6:30 p.m. and will air on Fox.
Three of the four played at Vanderbilt. Those three are all starting pitchers – Walker Buehler, Sonny Gray and Mike Minor.
Here is a look at the four local athletes selected for this year's game.
Mookie Betts
The Overton graduate was named to the American League team as a reserve. Betts, a Red Sox outfielder, is hitting .272 with 13 home runs and 40 RBIs. He has scored 77 runs this season.
This marks the fourth straight MLB All-Star game for Betts, who was the 2018 American League MVP.
Walker Buehler
The former Vanderbilt standout is 8-1 with a 3.46 ERA for the Dodgers. Buehler has struck out 113 batters and walked 14 this season.
Buehler is making his first All-Star Game appearance.
Sonny Gray
Gray, a Smyrna graduate and former Vanderbilt standout, was named to the National League team to replace the Nationals' Max Scherzer.
Gray is 5-5 with a 3.59 ERA for the Cincinnati Reds in 17 starts. He has 103 strikeouts and 33 walks in 90⅓ innings this season.
This marks his second All-Star Game selection. He did not play in his first one in 2015.
Mike Minor
Minor, a Forrest graduate and former Vanderbilt standout, enters the All-Star break with an 8-4 record for the Rangers. He has a 2.54 ERA and two complete games. He has struck out 114 batters and walked 41.
It's Minor first All-Star Game, but he will not play so he can get extra rest.
