Cheatham County has elevated assistant coach Dwayne Daniel to interim football coach for the 2019 season following the resignation of Eric Hatley.

Hatley left to take a coaching and teaching position at Franklin, where he will be an inside linebackers coach for the Rebels.

Daniel said he was approached by Cheatham County to be the interim coach after Hatley left.

"I'd love for it to be long term," said Daniel, who coached defensive backs and wide receivers previously for the Cubs. "I want to show that I can manage a team and develop players for college and get them to where they understand the game."

Cheatham County finished 4-7 in 2018, falling 47-7 to Pearl-Cohn in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Daniel will call the defensive plays this season along with his head coaching responsibilities. He'll also coach special teams and has added some passing game concepts.

"I don't have time to be nervous," Daniel said. "I welcome the opportunity. We have a lot of experienced kids."

The Cubs went 2-1 at a 7-on-7 passing tournament at Montgomery Central this week.

Daniel said his team has accepted the challenge of the coaching change late in the offseason. He was named the interim coach on Wednesday.
