PLEASANT VIEW – With the dead period ending, Sycamore got some time on the field as they look to prepare for the beginning of the season. While it isn’t go-time yet, coach Justin Robison is glad to get his guys out and working on a few things with the season quickly approaching.

“Really we just work on technique and fundamentals,” Robison said. “We want to be sound, and we expect our defensive backs to backpedal without falling on their backs and our running backs to know how to take a hand-off. We’re also working hard with our quarterbacks and delivering the ball and working on timing and the 7 on 7s we’ve been doing are good for that this time of the year. We’re trying to get our offensive line low and we can’t really use pads yet, so we’re just trying to get our guys to understand where to go.”

A big part of the preseason is the behind-the-scenes stuff like board-work and simply helping the players understand where to be and where to go.

“It’s huge, but some kids like freshmen, sophomores, and even some juniors still to this day don’t really know what some of those things mean when you’re writing them up on the board,” Robison said. “You’re trying to talk about spacing and alignment on the board but our kids don’t learn as much from the board as they do when we actually get them out here on the grass and get them in the play. That’s something we identified last season, we were having kids get up and draw plays on the board and they couldn’t do it. Our quarterbacks didn’t know where the receivers were going and that’s a problem. That’s been one major emphasis this season is understanding the game of football instead of just going out there and playing the game of football, because we think understanding the game is important as well.”
