GAME OF THE WEEK

Cordova (1-0) at Germantown (1-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

These two teams couldn't have opened the season much differently.

Germantown cruised to a 50-0 victory over KIPP. Dannie Towles picked off a pair of passes and ran one back for a touchdown.

Cordova pulled out a gritty 13-12 road win over Central. Josh Hastings made a leaping fourth-quarter interception to set up the game-winning drive for the Wolves.

The last time these teams met was in 2016, when Germantown prevailed 33-19. This week, they meet with Germantown's 22-game regular-season win streak on the line.

Thompson's pick: Germantown 24, Cordova 20.

Houston (1-0) at Central (0-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Houston's gameplan was clear last week — get the ball to Lincoln Pare. The all-state running back got 43 touches and ran for 266 yards with three touchdowns in a 36-12 win over Southaven.

Central held Cordova scoreless until the third quarter, but the Wolves scored a pair of second-half touchdowns to secure the win.

Thompson's pick: Houston 21, Central 13.

Ridgeway (0-1) at Whitehaven (1-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Ridgeway heads into Week 2 the same way it did last season, facing Whitehaven after a double-digit loss to MUS. The Roadrunners held their own against the Tigers last year, falling 21-14.

But this year, Ridgeway is without quarterback Quincy Casey, who is at Jackson State, and Whitehaven returns three Power-5 caliber linebackers in Bryson Eason, Martavius French and Tamarion McDonald.

Thompson's pick: Whitehaven 38, Ridgeway 10.

Wooddale (1-0) at Briarcrest Christian (1-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Both teams are coming off of dominant Week 1 victories. Wooddale beat Memphis Business Academy 43-7 and Briarcrest Christian beat Madison Academy (Ala.) 44-7 on the road.

Last year Wooddale played a pair of DII-AAA teams in Montgomery Bell Academy and Christian Brothers and lost both games 42-8. Both teams beat Briarcrest Christian as well, but the games were much closer.

Thompson's pick: Briarcrest Christian 38, Wooddale 21.

East (1-0) at Melrose (1-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

East earned its first win since 2017 with a 16-8 victory over Humboldt last week. Melrose beat Overton 12-6.

Last year was the first time in over a decade that these teams went without playing each other. East won 27-26 the last time they played.

Thompson's pick: Melrose 21, East 17.

White Station (1-0) at Arlington (1-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Arlington posted its first shutout win since 2015 with a 32-0 victory over Halls.

White Station picked up its first win under first-year coach Reid Yarbrough with a 64-14 win over Bolton. Three of Dwight Holmes II's six passing completions went for  touchdowns.

Thompson's pick: White Station 21, Arlington 14.

Freedom Prep (1-0) at Bluff City (0-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Bluff City fell to 48-40 to H.W. Byers (Miss.) in its first varsity football game last week. This week, it takes on its first Tennessee opponent and fellow Region 8-1A member Freedom Prep, which shut out Bolivar Central 24-0 last week.

Thompson's pick: Freedom Prep 28, Bluff City 14.

Craigmont (1-0) at St. George's (0-1)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Craigmont's Mike Cashaw exploded for 391 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns in a 34-32 win over Kingsbury. St. George's fell 21-14 to Trinity Christian.

Thompson's pick: St. George's 24, Craigmont 17.
