HENDERSONVILLE – The Beech Lady Bucs had their season come to a close Tuesday night at Drakes Creek Park, falling 8-0 to city-rival Hendersonville High School in the semifinal round of the District 10-AAA Tournament.

Hendersonville carried a 1-0 lead into the break, but seven goals in the final 40 minutes was more than enough to send Hendersonville back to the district championship.

“I thought we played Hendersonville as tough as they have been played in the district,” Beech head coach John Ferguson said. “We stopped playing once and they took advantage of it.”

The lopsided score doesn’t tell the whole story. Yes Hendersonville did score eight goals, but five goals came after Beech was forced to play a girl down following two yellow cards in the final 15 minutes.

Beech graduates just three seniors off of this year’s team including JC Swafford, Mia Dean, and Sydney Sandefur.

“I actually think they got the tougher job from the seniors that left last year,” Ferguson said. “It’s fantastic for those seniors to raise the expectation and to win a title before they leave. Meanwhile you have these seniors who are left here to step up in class and they are the game that is circled on everyone’s calendars. That is a tough job for anyone. The fact that they kept this team together is a debt I owe more to them than I owe to my seniors last year who won me a state title.

“I’ll remember the resiliency and courage of this team,” Ferguson continued on what he think of when he reflects on the 2019 season. “Couple that with the bullseye on their back, stepping up in class, and building off the best year Beech girls soccer ever had is quite remarkable. They played in the ups and downs and even in their lowest they enjoyed each other. That is what I will remember. It is easy to say you love each other when you are winning every day, but it is another thing to come together when things aren’t going your way and still play hard for each other. That is a true sign of love.”
