LSU defensive back Maurice Hampton has been named SEC freshman of the week for his six-tackle performance against Arkansas. The former Memphis University School standout was starting in place of injured All-American safety Grant Delpit. It was his first career start.

He entered the game with one tackle this season. He made four tackles in the first half, helping the Tigers build a 28-6 halftime lead. LSU held Arkansas to 304 yards of total offense and won 56-20.

Hampton is a two-sport standout who plans to play baseball for LSU as well. His jersey number is No. 14 for both sports.

He was last year's Commercial Appeal baseball player of the year, and he was the first player in Tennessee history to win Mr. Football and Mr. Baseball in the same season. He led the Owls to an appearance in the DII-AAA football state title game.

LSU, which is 10-0 and No. 1 in the AP poll, hosts Texas A&M on Saturday.
