McGavock celebrated senior night with an ugly 76-57 win over Antioch last Friday night.
The Raiders controlled the game from buzzer to buzzer. Their 16-point lead at halftime was enough to put the game out of reach.
McGavock head coach Paul Childress knew it was a different night and was happy to come away with a victory.
“I’m glad we won,” Childress said. “Anytime you have a coming home or senior night like tonight, things are different. Your routine gets off; you never know what could happen.”
The game finished in regulation but lasted more than two hours, thanks to an inordinate number of whistles.
The referees called three-second, traveling, lane and closely guarded violations throughout. Any possible foul was called, which led to 57 total free throws.
“It says a lot about them,” Childress said. “I know they don’t get it from me. I lose my cool too much. I think we all did a good job tonight of keeping our cool and understanding the flow of the game.”
McGavock celebrated senior night last Friday and honored nine players, seven of whom were with the program the last four years. Childress didn’t want to see them go yet.
“They’re a great group,” Childress said. “I’m glad we’re still playing, still got the district and the region and hopefully more. Just glad that tonight’s not the last night with them.”
The Raiders’ goal is much further than the district tournament, and for the players, they just want to get the postseason started.
“Really the season [is] never over,” senior Monte’ Streate said. “Now we’re just getting ready for the playoffs, so we got to keep doing the same thing.”
Senior Marvin Hughes said, “I’m just ready for the playoffs.”
The Raiders play Friday night at Cane Ridge to start their run in the district tournament.
