Bill Hockenberry has been named the interim girls’ basketball coach at Rockvale High School after Lindy King resigned last month to take an administrator job at Riverdale High School.

“I had approached them that I was interested if the opportunity came along,” Hockenberry said. “I knew they interviewed some quality candidates. I was just excited that (Rockvale Principal Steve Luker) called me. Lindy set a good bar out there her first year, and my expectations are trying to build on that.”

Most of Hockenberry’s past has been spent coaching boys’ basketball.

“I started out with the Siegel boys (varsity) under Chris Harris and Ben Dotson,” he said. “I was the head freshmen coach at Siegel and had Kerry Hammonds on the team and got spoiled and thought everybody should have a Kerry Hammonds.

“I got to La Vergne and was head freshman coach for year and coached with the varsity. I was the Smyrna Middle boys coach for nine years. I’m just really excited about his opportunity.”

Hockenberry’s father, George Hockenberry, coached girls basketball and won more than 400 games and had his most success at Oakland High School.

“I’ve been around girls’ basketball a long time,” Bill Hockenberry said. “I remember Rick Insell and Shelbyville, coach (Keith) Short at White County, Campbell Brandon at Lebanon and Buddy Pate at Riverdale. I’ve been around the girls’ game a long time.”

Hockenberry also has been the clock operator for the men’s and women’s basketball programs at Vanderbilt, and has performed the same duties in one men’s and two women’s NCAA region tournaments in Nashville.
