TSSAA adopts fourth classification for baseball, basketball and softball

MURFREESBORO — A fourth high school classification will be added starting with the 2021-22 school year in baseball, basketball and softball.

The TSSAA Board of Control adopted the measure on Monday at its August meeting held at Siegel. The Board also voted to keep six classes in Division I football and three in Division II football.

All four Division I classifications will be divided evenly. The classification will be set for the next two years.

The TSSAA must now wait to get 20th-day enrollments from schools across the state. Once those are submitted, the TSSAA can divide schools into all four classes.

Here is a look at other sports.

• Volleyball will remain three classes, divided by participating schools only.
• Soccer will remain three classes, divided by participating schools only.
• Track and field will have three classes, divided by participating schools only.
• Cross country will have two classes, split as A/AA and AAA based on track and field.
• Golf/tennis will have two classes, split evenly by participating schools only.
• Wrestling will be two classes, split evenly by participating schools only.
• Bowling will remain having one class.
• In DII, dual wrestling will have A/AA and AAA based on all schools. 
• Individual DII wrestling/bowling will remain a single class.
• All other DII sports will remain in two classes. Schools with 425 or higher enrollment will be in AA.
