SMYRNA—The Stewarts Creek Red Hawks rebounded from an opening week lost to Mt. Juliet to defeat the Clarksville Wildcats 42-7.
Defense led the Red Hawks Friday night as they forced five turnovers, including two interceptions from junior defensive back Tyree Thomas. The two first-half interceptions helped Stewarts Creek to jump out to a 21-7 lead at the half.
Stewarts Creek coach Ben Caudill was obviously pleased with his team’s defensive performance.
“Being able to have some opportunities defensively to get the ball back with fumbles and interceptions, those are some of the things that we’re going to have to continue to do to be successful,” he said. “It puts our offense in a good spot as well.”
On offense, Stewarts Creek was balanced with the run and pass. Senior receiver Jaylen Moore scored three touchdowns (two receiving and one rushing) and junior back back Gabe Walker scored two rushing touchdowns as well.
It was Caudill’s first win as the head coach for the Red Hawks.
“Having the bye Week 2 was tough, but I think it was good to have the bye in this environment,” he said. “We just had a bad taste in our mouths for two weeks. We competed and played well. I was real excited about it.”
As for Clarksville, the Wildcats at one point tied the ball game at 7 in the first quarter with a rushing touchdown from junior Rayshawn Bowling, but sophomore 1uarterback Davin Garinger threw three interceptions and couldn’t get the offense back in the right direction.
“When you turn it over and turn it over especially to a good team like Stewarts Creek that’s what can happen,” Clarksville coach Isaac Shelby said. “We’re really young on offense. Ninety percent of the guys that are touching the ball are just sophomores with very little experience.
“It’s not a good combination. In a normal year, some of the mistakes that we made tonight would’ve been worked out in scrimmages and jamborees.”
