Week 5 Rutherford County High School Football Preview

Oakland football coach Kevin Creasy knows nothing can be taken for granted when you play at Cookeville.

It would be easy for the No. 1 Patriots to look past the Cavaliers (1-3) on Friday night. After all, they’ve run roughshod over four straight opponents and have outscored them 249-38.

“I love the way Cookeville plays at home,” Creasy said. “They’re going to represent their school and their community. They’ll play their hearts out. I know a lot of Rutherford County teams have gone over there and come back saying, ‘wow, that was a battle.’

“Coach (Jimmy) Maynord has his team ready to play every week. They play hard and you can expect a four-quarter battle. We’ve got some guys hurt, so we need some younger ones to step up and be ready.”

In the first week that features all region games, Riverdale will look to bounce back from a loss to Smyrna when it hosts Rockvale.

“Smyrna hit us in the mouth and we didn’t respond,” Rivedale coach Will Kriesky said. “We’ve got a good group of seniors, though. We’re all competitive we hate to lose, so we’re going to learn from this.

“It will be different for our kids and their kids. There’s a quite a bit of guys on their squad that were on our side last year. They quarterback caught a touchdown pass for us last year as a freshman. You want those kids to be successful and we try to keep up with them and see how they’re doing. It will be exciting for our kids and we’ll be ready to play.”

Added Rockvale coach Rick Rice: “It ought to be a fun night. Those guys know each other and have played together. We went against them in 7 on 7 and there wasn’t a lot of trash talking, but they messed with each other. Riverdale’s got a big and physical team, but we’ll have a good plan and we’ll see what happens.”

La Vergne (2-2) will play at Stewarts Creek what could be another pivotal region game in terms of playoff seeding.

“They’ve got a good team and we’ve got a good team,” La Vergne coach Stanton Stevens said. “I expect a great ball game. If you want to see a great game then you need to be at Stewarts Creek Friday night.”

In other region games, Siegel hosts Coffee County for homecoming, Blackman travels to Coffee County, Smyrna is at home against McGavock, Eagleville is at Community and MTCS travels to Chattanooga Grace Christian.
