The Lakeway Christian soccer team cleared another milestone on Tuesday evening against Concord Christian.
Coming into the match 0-3 in the district, LCA’s Taka Wilson scored two minutes in and the Lady Lions held that lead for 78 minutes, taking down Concord Christian 1-0 for their first district win in school history.
“I was really impressed with the way we defended,” LCA coach Jason Moyer said. “I thought that we had a few moments where we were disorganized but for the most part, I thought we did really well. We tackled really well tonight.”
Needing any edge they could possibly get, the Lady Lions got one early when Wilson slotted one past the Concord keeper for the only goal of the night.
“We talked to our kids tonight about how this is a district game and both teams need a district win, so let’s go out in front early and get ahead of them,” Moyer said. “We talked about scoring in the first 10 minutes, I didn’t really expect us to do it in the first two but I will take it.”
With their defense holding down the fort in the back, Lakeway had plenty of opportunities to add to their lead. LCA came close multiple times with Abbey Crutchley and Carli Sawyer.
However, the Lady Lions were unable to knock another into the back of the net, something that Moyer wants to see his team continue to work on.
“I thought we were going to get one earlier, we had a couple of opportunities,” Moyer said. “We are still just trying to work on keeping the ball down and playing it to the back post. We tend to hit everything in front of the kid. We’ll keep working on that.”
With their first district win comes relief for LCA and Moyer. But he doesn’t want to see his team stop there.
“This is our first district win in school history,” Moyer said. “We were 0-3 after playing three really good teams. That was a good team we beat. But to come out and defend our home turf was really good. We have another district match here on Tuesday so if we win that, we’ll finish fourth in the district which is pretty good.”
Lakeway has one district match remaining against Berean Christian next Tuesday night at 6 p.m. For Moyer, he would like to see his team continue to get better with district playoffs coming up.
“I think we want to continue to be more and more aggressive,” Moyer said. “With a young team, getting them to tackle and running through the ball. We need to continue to build on that aggressiveness and work on our finishing as well.”
