Week 12 roundup: Columbia wins in third OT; Alex Broome scores five TDs in Lipscomb Academy rout

The Tennessee high school football playoffs have kicked off. The first round of the postseason had big performances along with upsets. Here is a look at what happened in the first round Friday.

BGA 45, Northpoint Christian 13: Brett Brown was 8-of-11 passing for 213 yards and a touchdown and had two carries for five yards and a score in BGA’s win. Daniel Morris added 57 yards on three catches and KenTrez Jordan had two catches for 55 yards.

Brentwood 45, Cane Ridge 13: Davis White was 17-of-19 passing for 247 yards and five touchdowns to lead Brentwood past Cane Ridge. Tennessee commitment Walker Merrill had 10 catches for 114 yards and two TDs. Teammate Mac Hirschman had two catches for 84 yards and two scores.

Columbia 21, Gallatin 14 3OT: Brady McCanless' 1-yard TD run in the third overtime sent the Lions into the second round of the Class 5A playoffs and ended the Green Wave's season in the opening round for a second straight season. Columbia stopped Gallatin on fourth-and-24, ending the game with a sack. McCanless was 17-of-26 passing for 195 yards and two TDs.

DeKalb Co. 38, Spring Hill 15: Mr. Football semifinalist Axel Aldino threw for 199 yards and a TD in the win.

East Nashville 26, Fairview 13: Rontavius Gregory ran for 253 yards on 16 carries in the win. Gregory scored all four of the Eagles' touchdowns, including a 91-yard score. Teammate Kwanzee Jemison added 74 passing yards and ran for 107 yards.

ECS 49, FRA 21: David DeRocher was 18-of-42 passing for 190 yards and two touchdowns and Jeffery Vercher had 17 carries for 132 yards and a score in a loss to ECS.

Franklin 49, Smyrna 13: Connor Beavon was 18-of-24 passing for 378 yards and four touchdowns to lead Franklin. Carson Repass had four catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns and Mitch Lanik caught seven balls for 102 yards for the Admirals. Landon Miller was 12-of-21 passing for 141 yards and a touchdown and had nine carries for 76 yards for Smyrna.

Goodpasture 28, Knoxville Webb 21: Brendan Jones continued his strong season, accumulating 257 all-purpose yards with two TDs. That included a 95-yard punt return for a TD. Teammate Cooper Pennington threw for 207 yards with two TDs and ran for 76 yards to win the Cougars' first Division II-AA playoff game.

Hendersonville 30, Blackman 21: Hendersonville's Ellis Ellis had 87 rushing yards and two TDs. He also caught a 55-yard touchdown pass and his intercepted pass sealed the win. Teammate Brent Rowe had 32 carries for 168 yards. Blackman's Todd Lark reeled in five catches for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Independence 49, La Vergne 14: Jaxson Campbell was 14-of-20 passing for 292 yards and four touchdowns for Independence. Calvin Wilson had four catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns and Tre Hartwell added 100 yards and two scores on 11 carries for the Eagles. Lavandrea Webb threw for 169 yards and ran for 46 yards for La Vergne. Teammate Greg Bush had nine catches for 159 yards. But Independence held Ray Banner, the Nashville area's leading rusher to 31 yards.

Knoxville Catholic 43, Ensworth 20: Levi Moore was 6-of-15 passing for 76 yards and a touchdown and Drew Sanders was 6-of-14 passing for 76 yards and a touchdown in Ensworth’s loss. Teammate Jacob Page had five catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Lewis County 40, Scotts Hill 7: Blake Carroll had nine carries for 130 yards and three touchdowns and Lincoln Brewer had five carries for 142 yards and a score to lead Lewis County past Scotts Hill.

Lipscomb Academy 63, St. George's 3: Alex Broome, a Division II-AA Mr. Football finalist, had 317 total yards with five TDs. He ran for 131 yards on seven carries and caught six passes for 186 yards. Teammate Luther Richesson was 9-of-10 passing for 244 yards and three scores.

Marshall County 24, Macon County 12: Bryson Hammons was 8-of-14 passing for 112 yards and two touchdowns and Demari Braden had 25 carries for 94 yards for Marshall County.

MBA 42, St. Benedict 0: Patrick Wilk had 13 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown to lead MBA. Marcel Reed had four carries for 36 yards and two touchdowns and was 4-of-8 passing for 74 yards. Rhett Hayles returned a kickoff 83 yards for a score and had five carries for 78 yards and a touchdown for the Big Red.

Mt. Juliet 17, Warren Co. 13: Amarion Workings scored a 1-yard TD with 17 seconds remaining to lead the Bears to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. Teammate Jamari Sowell led Mt. Juliet with 67 rushing yards on 18 carries. Stephen Swoner was 6-of-9 passing for 67 yards. C.J. Taylor, Warren County's first Mr. Football semifinalist, had 197 rushing yards and two TDs in the loss. Teammate Ryland Holder added 107 rushing yards.

Nashville Christian 54, Webb 26: Matt McClary was 5-of-6 passing for 110 yards and two touchdowns and Deion King had four carries for 110 yards and a touchdown for Nashville Christian. Teammate Carson Guthrie returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score and Martease Edwards had a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown. Weston Coop was 9-of-20 passing for 194 yards and a touchdown for Webb.

Nolensville 38, Livingston Academy 14: Ryder Galardi threw for 282 yards with a touchdown to pace the Knights. Teammate Samson Johnson had 113 yards on 11 carries and Ben Coggin had six catches for 91 yards and a TD.

Oakland 49, Rossview 0: Jordan James rushed for 213 yards and two touchdowns and Vic Stephenson passed for two touchdowns and caught another in the blowout. Isaiah Horton had 79 yards receiving and two TDs. Oakland's defense posted its second shutout of the season.

Riverdale 40, Wilson Central 0: Junior QB Jameson Holcomb made a triumphant return for third-ranked Riverdale (9-2) after missing four games with a broken finger. Holcomb was 15-of-17 for 209 yards and two TDs in the blowout win. Marcus Lloyd and Brandon Connard each rushed for two touchdowns and the Warrior defense held Wilson Central to just 91 yards in posting their second shutout.

Riverside 26, Eagleville 8: Marcus Collins was 8-of-19 passing for 110 yards and a touchdown and Kaden Snitzer had three catches for 72 yards and a score and intercepted two passes in the loss. Wyatt McLemore led the Eagles’ defense with 12 tackles.

Springfield 42, Jackson South Side 7: The Yellow Jackets rolled into the second round of the Class 4A playoffs behind Zerel Boyd's 127 receiving yards and two TDs. Teammate Kevontez Hudson threw for 119 yards, ran for 109 more and had four total TDs. He also picked off a pass. And Devon Crenshaw had six tackles with three for loss.

Stewart Co. 32, Stratord 29: Will Page threw for two touchdowns, ran for a score and returned an interception for a touchdown in the win. Page finished 17-of-28 passing for 221 yards. Markeese Groves ran for 158 yards on 10 carries — all in the second half.

Summit 42, Hillwood 6: Destin Wade was 5-of-8 passing for 85 yards and three touchdowns and had three carries for 44 yards and a score and teammate Brandon King had nine carries for 82 yards for Summit. Cam Davis was 20-of-28 passing for 160 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Hilltoppers.

Trinity Christian 21, Grace Christian 7: Ashton Kelley was 19-of-31 passing for 162 yards and a touchdown as Grace Christian fell to Trinity Christian.

Trousdale County 38, Tyner Academy 0: Jayden Hicks had four carries for 32 yards and a touchdown, one catch for 45 yards and an interception return for 60 yards and a touchdown in the win. Teammate Cameron Rankins had 13 carries for 70 yards and two touchdowns.

Tullahoma 49, Stone Memorial 8: Ryan Scott threw for 147 yards and two TDs to help the Wildcats remain undefeated at 11-0. Teammate Jakobe Thomas, a Class 4A Mr. Football semifinalist, had 116 all-purpose yards including 86 rushing yards and a score.
