Michael McGoffin was hoping to maintain the level of success with the Siegel girls soccer program when took over for Eric Shelton (who took the job at Nolensville) in 2016.

Five seasons later, McGoffin is happy with how he is leaving the Lady Stars program.

After spending more than 30 years coaching, including the past eight at Siegel, McGoffin has stepped away from coaching to focus more on his personal life. He will remain as a teacher at Siegel.

"For the time being, I'm taking time off from it," McGoffin said. "My son will be a senior and my daughter will be a freshman next year. I wanted to make sure my time was more available for them and my family."

Siegel is expected to replace McGoffin quickly. Whoever takes over will have a strong tradition to continue.

Siegel reached the Class AAA state tournament twice in McGoffin's five seasons and earned a sectional trip in another. He reached the region four out of five years.

"He did a great job with the program," Siegel principal Larry Creasy said. "He continued the great tradition that Coach Shelton left behind."

Siegel was eliminated in the 7-AAA semifinals this past season. McGoffin's best season came in 2019 when the Lady Stars went 14-6-2, won the 7-AAA tournament and reached the state tournament

"When I took over for (Shelton), there was a high bar of expectations of good play on the field and good character," McGoffin said. "The girls were great. There were no issues.

"I'm not going anywhere. I'll still be at Siegel and will help shepherd in the new change and help the program develop when I can. It's just a good time to step away from the day-to-day operations."
