Rang was hired as Gatlinburg-Pittman's new coach in March 2017. He missed the playoffs in his first season as the Highlanders finished 5-6, but he made the playoffs each of the next three seasons, including reaching the Class 3A quarterfinals in 2020.

In his four seasons at Gatlinburg-Pittman, Rang went 31-17. Gatlinburg-Pittman was his fourth head coaching job. He coached at Powell for one season (2012) and led the Panthers to the Class 5A semifinals.

Rang then became the coach at Dresden in West Tennessee and went 32-8 in three seasons. He led Dresden to the Class 1A state title in 2016.
