Goodpasture has named Greg Cotten as its new football coach.

Cotten was previously on staff with the Cougars under Tyler Turner as an offensive line coach. Cotten had previously been the interim coach after Turner resigned to go to Jackson Prep in Mississippi.

Cotten was also the assistant offensive coordinator.

"I think that Greg brings a lot of energy to the program," Goodpasture principal Lynn Dearing said Tuesday. "He's already well respected by the players and coaching staff. With his energy and expertise, we think it's a win-win for everyone."

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:Tyler Turner resigns as Goodpasture football coach after one season

This is Cotten's first high school football coaching position. He's also the school's wrestling coach. Dearing said the school received interest from several local coaches and some from out of state.

Goodpasture reached the Division II-AA semifinals in Turner's lone season. The Cougars finished 9-3 in 2020  — losing twice to state champion CPA and one time to state runner-up Lipscomb Academy.
