Four Chattanooga-area boys' basketball players earn all-state honors

Four Chattanooga-area basketball players were included among those honored on the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's boys' all-state team Tuesday.

The girls' all-state teams were released on Monday.

Representing the area were Cleveland senior Grant Hurst on the Class AAA list, along with Howard senior Kerrick Thorne in AA, McCallie senior Eric Rivers in Division II-AA and Boyd Buchanan sophomore Caden Johnson in D-II A.

The 6-foot-2 Hurst, a recent UT-Martin commitment, averaged 18 points, five assists and five rebounds per game in helping the Blue Raiders return to the state tournament, where he scored 32 points against Collierville.

Thorne also helped guide his team to the state tournament, where the 6-foot-6 post helped keep the Hustlin' Tigers close against the state's top-ranked team. Thorne averaged 13 poitns, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots per game.

Rivers, also an all-state performer in football where he has signed a scholarship with Memphis University, averaged 17.5 points, four assists, 2.5 steals per game for the Blue Tornado.

Johnson, a point guard, helped the Buccaneers reach the state tournament by averaging 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals per game.
