The Munford and Covington baseball teams swept two-game district sets Monday and Tuesday to stay at the top of their league standings.
Munford (14-10 overall, 5-1 District 13-AAA) got complete-game shutouts from Chase Spears and Garrett McKinney to beat Dyer County on consecutive days.
A week after pitching a no-hitter vs. Brighton, McKinney hurled a one-hitter Monday at home in a 3-0 win, striking out two and walking just one.
Shane Cox sparked the offense with a two-run double. Tanner Davidson was 2 for 3 with a triple and Trent Suggs was 2 for 2 with an RBI.
On Tuesday in Newbern, Spears threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks in a 7-0 Munford win.
McKinney was the offensive standout with three RBIs, Davidson was 2 for 4 and Spears drove in two.
Covington (17-8, 7-1 District 15-AA) picked up a district win at Bolivar on Monday night, winning 6-4 behind a solid pitching performance by Landon Myers. He struck out 12, walked three and allowed six hits over six innings.
Cameron Tindall was hot, going 3-4 with a pair of singles, a double and three runs scored. Parker Davis added a two-run single for CHS, which outhit the Tigers 8-6. Covington scored in each of the first five innings and never trailed. Bolivar made it close with a three-run third inning sparked by two of the Chargers’ three errors in the game.
On Tuesday at home Davis pitched a five-inning one-hitter with six strikeouts and five walks to lead Covington past Bolivar 14-4.
Chris Godwin, Holden Warmath and Carson Ruffin each had triples in the game Tindall, Myers, Brennan Forbess and Lane Butler each drove in two runs.
Brighton (13-11, 5-3 District 13-AAA) split a two-game district set with Hardin County Monday and Tuesday.
Kaleb Baskin pitched a complete-game five-hitter with eight strikeouts Monday in Brighton in a 1-0 win.
Colton Bryant (2 for 2) doubled in the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Andrew Davis had a double for Brighton and Bennett Stutts had Brighton’s only other hit.
Brighton had 12 hits Tuesday in Savannah but lost 4-2.
Logan Rushing was 3 for 4 and Luke Perkins and Luke Olivette each had two hits for the Cardinals.
