The Hampton baseball team came up on the wrong side of a heartbreaker Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs fell 2-1 to University High in a hard-fought battle in a District 1-A elimination game at David Crockett.

Hampton won 14 of their final 21 games and recorded 16 wins on the year.

Against the Bucs, it was a pitchers’ duel from the outset.

The Bulldogs were able to get a runner on base in the opening frame as Morgan Lyons drew a walk, but Hampton was unable to capitalize.

After Will Joyner hit a double for the Bucs in the home side of the frame, a strikeout and ground out ended the first inning scoreless.

The Bulldogs saw Josh Owen get on base and advance to second in the third to get in scoring position, but a ground out ended the inning.

Base runners were hard to come by until the top of the sixth as Chance Point hit a one-out single, and Lyons added another single.

Conor Jones hit a shot to right field for a single that brought Point across the plate to give Hampton a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth.

UH, however, answered as Jacob Peeler scored off a fly ball to left field to even things up at 1-1 heading to the final inning.

The Bulldogs were unable to get anything going in the home side of the frame as Daniel Seehorn scored with the bases loaded to send the Bucs to the win.

Owens, Jones, Point, and Lyons each tallied a hit for Hampton.

On the mound, Owens pitched an absolute gem as he allowed just two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Kaleb Meredith picked up the win for UH as he struck out 10 batters with one earned run on four hits.
