Siegel boys basketball coach Dyron Birdwell, who led the Stars to the TSSAA state tournament this past season, is leaving the program.

However, it will be a short move.

Birdwell confirmed on Tuesday he has accepted the job at archrival Oakland, which lost coach Troy Bond to Brentwood High School.

“First of all, I want to thank Siegel for the opportunity and taking a chance on me five years ago,” Birdwell said. “I’m really proud of what we accomplished at Siegel and how we built it.

“With Oakland, I think it speaks for itself. It’s a great school with a lot of rich tradition in multiple sports, including basketball with coach (Randy) King and coach (Troy) Bond and all the other coaches. I thought it would help me out in my coaching career. It’s a place I’m excited about being at.”

Siegel’s teams got better each year under Birdwell and was senior heavy this season as it made its run to the state tournament.

“It’s just an opportunity I saw at Oakland,” Birdwell said. “I’m sure a lot of people are going to say I’m chasing athletes, but that’s not really the case. When I was first approached about it I thought it was a place that had been successful and has the opportunity to be one of the most successful programs in the midstate and the entire state. (Oakland football) coach (Kevin) Creasy has proven that.”
