HENDERSONVILLE — After missing summer scrimmages and 7-on-7’s in 2020, high school football in the midstate is back to feeling a little more normal.

On Tuesday, Pope John Paul II held their first 7-on-7 of the summer, disposing of Northwest during the two-hour throwing period.

Tuesday’s result is nothing to boast about but instead is used as a starting point for the 2021 season.

Highly-touted quarterback-wide receiver duo Kenny Minchey and Colin Cook looked like they hadn’t missed a beat from last season, while the defense also showed the knack for taking away the football — registering six interceptions.

All in all, Tuesday was a good result for head coach Justin Geisinger.

“We made a lot of plays on both sides of the ball today, so that was exciting to see,” Geisinger said. “Today was all about executing our brand of football which is with tremendous effort, discipline and great attitudes. We made some mistakes but we will get those corrected. We don’t want our team to be afraid to make a mistake — go out, have fun and play loose and I think we did that.”

JPII will host another 7-on-7 on Thursday when Nashville Christian comes to Hendersonville.

“It’s nice getting our guys back into this routine of playing during the summer,” Geisinger said. “Your team benefits from seeing another color jersey, from competing against other kids so that was great to see today. As long as our kids continue to show they are coachable, then everything else will fall into place.”

As for their remaining summer schedule, the Knights will hold three more 7-on-7s before leaving for Camp Agape on July 24. JPII will have three scrimmages before the start of the season; at Stewarts Creek vs. Pearl-Cohn and at Brentwood.

JPII will kick off the 2021 season at home against Hillsboro on August 20.
