Former Middle Tennessee Christian School head football coach Fred Shambaugh is back in Rutherford County as the offensive line coach at Blackman.

Shambaugh spent six seasons at MTCS, going 42-25 with five playoff appearances.

He moved to Texas to take a job at Dallas Christian School and went 11-1 last season, losing in a heartbreaking fashion in the state title game.

“The score was tied 20-20 and we were in the final minute and were headed for overtime, but we threw a pick six to lose the game.” Shambaugh said.

He said Texas football was outstanding and could have easily finishing his coaching career there, but it wasn’t the best move overall for his family.

“My family and I love Tennessee,” he said. “We are in our old church and the relationships I have here I love. (Blackaman Principal) Dr. (Leisa) Justus was great. She reminds me of Texas football as she supports it greatly.”

Shambaugh said he looks forward to being a position coach.

“I do not have all the headaches as I just coach my players on the field,” he said. “I do not have to worry about parents. There are a lot of things I do not have to worry about anymore.”

He said in the state of Texas football is definitely No. 1. He said he would pull up places and had to check out the stadiums to see if they were high school or college stadiums.

“What they spend on schools here in Tennessee, they spend on football stadiums,” Shambaugh said. “There are $30, $40, $50 million dollar high school stadiums in Texas. We were going to play a playoff game at Baylor’s stadium, but it was antiquated so we played at a high school stadium because it was in better condition.”
