Providence Christian Academy notched the program’s first-ever victory on Saturday with a 48-0 home shutout win over Franklin Classical.

PCA started the eight-man program last year and expectedly struggled, but the Lions certainly got off to a promising start to the season on Saturday.

“I am so proud of these kids,” PCA coach LeBron Ferguson said. “This is a great night for PCA. Last season we birthed a pony and tonight it was running. We just have to keep the pony running now.”

The only two things that stopped PCA on Saturday night were yellow flags as it had seven penalties ranging from holding, to delay of game, false starts and a personal foul.

The other thing that stymied the Lions was a 30-minute lightning delay over nine minutes into the opening quarter.

The Lions combatted the seven penalties by scoring seven touchdowns and scoring by every means — rushing, receiving, special teams, fumble return and capping it off by sacking quarterback Dylan Chestnut in the end zone for a safety.

Lucas Nehmeth threw a 24-yard pass for a score to Landon Carney. Later in the game, he had two runs for scores of 12 and 14 yards, respectively. Kaleb Caywood also had a pair of scores — a fumble return of 25 yards and a 38-yard jaunt for a touchdown.

“When I picked up the fumble I was so happy,” Caywood said. “All I could see was an open field. It was so great when my brothers celebrated with me.”

Eli Wilson had several big punt returns and broke one late in the first half to put the Lions up 40-0 at intermission. Jonah Wilson also galloped 80 yards in the first half for a score.

The PCA defense was so dominant that at halftime the Knights had run 20 plays but gained only three total yards. The Lions’ next game will be this Friday night when they host LCA.
