Holmes, 43, has been charged with simple assault/domestic violence stemming from a physical altercation with a woman on June 19, according to an incident report filed by the Shelby County Sherriff's Office and obtained by the Commercial Appeal.

The physical altercation happened around 10 p.m. on June 19. Holmes, listed as the woman's boyfriend, pushed her to the ground and pinned her there with his knee on her back, according to the report filed July 10. No injuries were reported.

Holmes declined to comment when reached Monday by the Commercial Appeal.

Holmes was an assistant at East when the Mustangs won three consecutive state titles from 2016-18 under Penny Hardaway. When Hardaway left to take the head coaching job at  University of Memphis, Holmes was promoted and coached the Mustangs to an appearance in the Class AAA state title game in 2019.

East finished 21-9 but did not qualify for the state tournament in 2020. The Mustangs did not play basketball in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
