Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences overcame problematic weather conditions to continue their tournament run in a win over visiting Cascade , 2-0, late Thursday night.

CSAS Head Coach David Poss made a few phone calls and worked out an agreement with CCS to use their field for the game. The gesture from CCS saved the game from further postponement.

The match started out  at CSAS with a 7:00 p.m.

start, however, thunderstorms and heavy rain lead to multiple postponements and relocating the match.

Despite the late start, 9:00 p.m., both teams proved ready to play with multiple threatening offensive attacks to open the match. Led by Cheyenne Frye, a Patriots’ attack was spoiled after a great save by Champions’ goalkeeper Claire Perry. Perry was able to stretch far enough to reach a scorching ball, keeping the game knotted up at 0-0. Audrey Benson and Zeva Phillips for CSAS kept the Cascade attack at bay throughout the first half. On the opposite side of the field, the Cascade defense was providing enough of a challenge to slow down the opposing offense.

After a first-half draw at 0-0. the Patriots settled in and made incredible passes to weave through the Champions. Each pass was met with another pass, keeping Cascade on their heels. As soon as daylight opened up, the Patriots capitalized with a goal. An outside-the-box cross coming from Ella Hurst was placed at the center of the box. Receiving the cross was Cheyenne Frye who would send the ball screaming into the bottom left corner. The Patriots had the momentum and the lead, 1-0.

Minutes later, CSAS’s Anna Chen would make a risky, but effective slide tackle to stop a breakaway attack from Cascade. Chen forced a corner kick that would be shut down by a group of Patriots. As desperation set in for the Champions,

CSAS’s Zava Phillips delivered a backbreaker with a beautiful freekick, around 40 yards from the goal, to the top of the net over an outstretched hand. The kick was perfectly placed. The Patriots had firm control of the game, up 2-0, with less than 10 minutes remaining. However, Cascade would make for late-game fireworks with a penalty kick goal by Eve Speirs. The goal was too little, too late as time expired. The Patriots had won, 2-1.

“We had to adjust from coming off of grass to playing on turf, but we were able to execute what we wanted to do,” said Poss. “When they found their touch factor on the turf, that was good.”

Overcoming obstacle after obstacle, CSAS walked off the field at 11:00 p.m. victorious yet again. “The seniors on this team have never had a season with over five wins, so this was uncharted territory,” said Poss with a smile. “This is the hardest game they’ve played this postseason, but again they played through it.”

CSAS (16-3-1) will next host Smith Co. in a state sectional match on Saturday, while Cascade travels to Merrol Hyde.
