Football – Waverly at Fairview

The Fairview High School football team suffered a 49-14 defeat in the regular season finale at home on Friday against Region 6-3A’s Waverly Central.

The Yellow Jackets close the regular season 6-4 overall and 4-2 in region play, good for the third seed. The loss also sends Fairview on the road in the first round of the playoffs next week. The Yellow Jackets will head to Smith County, Region 5-3A’s runner-up.

Layden Grant again carried the load offensively for Fairview racking up 149 yards on the goring on 22 carries with one touchdown. Jacob Clevenger added another TD on the ground for the home team.

Jonathan Perkerson recorded 10 tackles to lead the Yellow Jackets defense, while Maverick Cutulle had eight tackles, including two for loss.

Jake McNamara threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Patriots to a regular season finale win Friday.

The Patriots bounced back from their first loss – a 49-38 setback at Independence last week.

Boyce Smith, Michael Mayer, Max Collins and Cason Walker all caught TDs for Page with Collins leading the way with nine grabs for 151 yards. Eric Hazard added a rushing score for the Patriots, who finished 5-0 in Region 6-5A.

Page will host Wilson Central next week in the first round of the playoffs.

Summit 42, Franklin 7

The attention now switches from the regular season to the postseason for the Spartans, who closed out their first undefeated regular season with a drubbing of Franklin Friday night.

The Admirals (1-9, 0-5) were the last team to beat Summit (10-0, 5-0), 27-20 in last year’s Week 4. The Spartans then ran the table the rest of the season en route to a state title in Class 5A, and they got some redemption over Franklin with a 42-7 victory Friday.

Quarterback Destin Wade completed 3-of-5 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown and added 67 yards on two rushes in limited time. Austin Grooters racked up 85 rushing yards and a touchdown for Summit, and Franklin was led by Bryce Sparks with 167 yards on 17 totes.

Summit, the Region 7-6A champion, is seeking its third straight trip to Cookeville for state championship weekend. It was the runner up in Class 5A in 2019 before winning last year’s title. Its postseason will start with a home game against Clarksville, the fourth seed out of Region 5-6A.

Franklin finishes a tough first season under head coach Alex Melton, Summit’s former defensive coordinator.
