CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – District basketball will not tip off until the new year when the second half of the season starts; however, Tuesday night the Rossview Hawks (1-1) and the Kenwood Knights (2-0) will face off at Rossview.

The matchup offers a little bit of intrigue for the city opponents. Rossview comes in with a young team and several players who are athletes in other sports playing basketball this season. Kenwood enters with a talented roster led by multi-sport athlete, Jaylen Washington.

Youth movement

The Hawks graduated eight seniors from last year’s squad and also had two more players from last year’s team not play this season. That will not stop head coach Johnny Jackson from competing this season. The Hawks have brought in Seneca Bradley, who was a top player for the football team, to play this season and have several key players from the junior varsity squad that are ready to make the jump to the varsity roster.

“We had some young guys who did well in JV and guys who came in and got some minutes last year,” said Jackson about his current roster. “We only have Ty Butler from last year; he is a senior, he probably started five games for us last year. And Julian Hatfield is a senior; he started ten games for us. So not a lot of varsity experience.”

The Hawks have started the season well with the young roster, falling by two on the road at Columbia and picking up their first victory at home against Station Camp.

Scouting the Knights

Kenwood brings in a seasoned team under head coach Chase Cronin. The Knights will bring an athletic lineup led by Jaylen Washington, which is why the Knights are off to a 2-0 start to the season.

On the Knights, coach Jackson said, “They’ve got a very talented scorer in Jaylen Washington. We’ve known that now for two years. He had 33 on a career high going into this year, he put 33 on us as a sophomore. No. 1, Cam’ron (Dowell), has improved his game this summer, and (Nic) Boykin is very good at the point guard.”

Kenwood coach Chase Cronin was not available for an interview this week.

Rossview and Kenwood will face off on Tuesday night.
