A busy week of WCHS basketball action saw the teams take wins on Monday and Tuesday at Lewis County and Clarksburg. Friday night found them hosting Summertown. Both teams lost their contests against the Lady Eagles and Eagles. The Lady Cats are now 5 – 2 on the year, with the Wildcats standing at 4 – 3. They go to Clifton and Perry County this week before returning home to take on Mt. Pleasant on the 13th, Clarksburg on the 14th, and Decatur/Riverside on the 17th.
The Lady Cats totally dominated in their game against the Lady Panthers of Lewis County, leading 31 – 0 at the end of the first quarter. They forced 32 turnovers – eleven in the first quarter – to win by the final score of 75 – 17. Alexis Maghielse came off the bench to lead the scoring with 16 points. She had 2 rebounds, a steal, and an assist. Blair Baugus scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds, a block, and 2 steals. Michaela Gallian, seeing her first action of the year, came in to hit for 8 points and had a rebound and a steal in nine minutes. Cambree Camfield scored 6 points and had an assist. Kenzie Griggs and Celia Powell each scored 5 points. Griggs had a rebound, 3 steals, and 4 assists, while Powell had 2 boards and an assist. Jac Keaton and Isabel Luedeke each scored 4 points. Keaton had 3 steals and 2 assists, while Luedeke had 2 rebounds and an assist. Kylee Brewer, Raegan Crews, and Annie Lee each scored 3 points. Brewer had 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists, with Crews adding a steal and an assist. Lee had 2 rebounds and an assist. Emma Bryant, Lauren Bryant, and Savanna McClain each scored 2 points. Emma had 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist, and Lauren had a rebound, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Jamie Lauren Hickman had a rebound and a steal, as all healthy Lady Cats saw action.
The Wildcats came out and fell behind 16 – 10 to the Panthers in the first quarter. The margin increased to 10 by the half, 27 – 17. The Panthers went up by 15 in the third before the ‘Cats came back to cut the margin to 37 – 30 by the end of the third. In the fourth, Lewis County went back up by double digits, but with 4:03 left, Ethan Camfield nailed a three to make it an 8-point deficit, 45 – 37. Lewis Co. turned the ball over on their next possession, and Camfield made them pay again with another 3-pointer to make it 45 – 40. The teams traded turnovers, but with 3:36 left Tyler Moser hit a basket to make the margin 3, 45 – 42. Lewis County hit a pair of free throws to go up 47 – 42. Cooper Shamer hit a lay-up to make it 47 – 43, and then with 2:28 Ethan Camfield nailed another 3 to tie the game at 47 all. The ‘Cats gave up a basket and turnover in the final half-minute to trail, 49 – 47. They called a timeout with seventeen seconds left. At the buzzer, Shamer hit a three from the wing to seal the win for the Wildcats 50 – 49.
Ethan Camfield and Tyler Moser led the Wildcats with 18 and 17 points respectively. Camfield nailed 6 three-point goals and had a rebound and a steal. Moser had 8 boards, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Cooper Shamer finished with 8 points, 3 boards, 3 steals, and 3 assists. Sayler Skelton had 6 points and 3 rebounds. Eli McClain added a point and had 4 rebounds and an assist. Justice Bell had a rebound and three assists, while Ryder Butler, Landyn Prater, Austin Whitson, and Jesse Dixon each had a rebound. Dixon also had a steal. The Wildcats shot 37% from the field and forced 18 Lewis County turnovers.
At Clarksburg on Tuesday night, the Lady Cats forced 17 first half turnovers by the Lady Rockets in route to a 49 – 17 halftime lead. They went on to take the win, 76 – 38, with all the active players participating. Savanna McClain, Jac Keaton, and Blair Baugus all hit for double figures with 14, 13, and 12 points respectively. McClain was 9 of 10 from the free throw line with 7 rebounds and a steal. Keaton added a rebound and two steals, while Baugus had 7 boards, 2 blocks, and 3 steals. Michaela Gallian and Cambree Camfield each added 8 points. Camfield had a pair of boards and 3 steals, and Gallian had 3 rebounds. Alexis Maghielse had 7 points with 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Kenzie Griggs had 4 points with a steal and an assist. Emma Bryant, Lauren Bryant, Annie Lee, and Isabel Luedeke each scored 2 points. Lauren had 3 rebounds, 4 steals, and an assist, while Lee had a rebound and a steal. Luedeke added 2 rebounds. Celia Powell and Kylee Brewer rounded out the scoring with 1 point each. Brewer also had 6 rebounds. Jamie Lauren Hickman and Raegan Crews each had a rebound. The Lady Cats came up with 19 steals and won the rebounding battle, 38 – 19.
The Wildcats came out and led by one, 12-11, at the end of the first quarter against the Rockets. In the second, they went on an 11 – 0 run in the first three minutes to push out to a double-digit lead, 36 – 23, by the half. They coasted to an 85 – 48 win. Tyler Moser had a big night for the Wildcats, hitting for 34 points. He had another double-double with 15 rebounds and had a steal and an assist. Cooper Shamer also hit for double figures with 11 points. Shamer had 6 boards, 3 steals, and an assist. Ethan Camfield added 8 points and had 2 rebounds, a steal, and 4 assists. Austin Whitson and Jesse Dixon each scored 6 points. Whitson had a steal, while Dixon had 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Avery Wilson scored 5 points and had 2 rebounds and an assist, and Sayler Skelton had 4 points with 7 rebounds and a steal. Justice Bell, Ryder Butler, Cayson Castleman, Jace Foster, and Will Robertson each scored 2 points. Bell 3 boards, 4 steals, and 3 assists, with Butler grabbing 3 boards and having 3 assists. Castleman had a rebound and a steal. Foster had a rebound, and Robertson had 2 rebounds. Eli McClain rounded out the scoring with one point and had 4 rebounds and a steal. Issac Hampton had a rebound as all the Wildcats saw action.
The Lady Cats came out against the Lady Eagles of Summertown and took a 7 – 2 lead at the end of the first quarter as Lauren Bryant hit a last second three. They saw the lead disappear as they trailed 17 – 16 at the half. In the third, the score was tied at 25, but Summertown pulled away to lead 31 – 28 after three quarters. In the fourth, Lauren Bryant again connected from 3 with 1:57 left, to tie the contest at 34 all. Summertown answered with a three-point play to go up 37 – 34 and went on to win by the final score of 39 – 34.
Blair Baugus scored 15 points on the night and had 12 rebounds, a block, 2 steals, and an assist. Michaela Gallian added 9 points with 4 rebounds and a block in 12 minutes of action. Lauren Bryant had the two big three-pointers and a steal and an assist. Jac Keaton scored 2 points and 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Alexis Maghielse and Savanna McClain each had 1 point. McClain had 2 rebounds and an assist. Cambree Camfield had 2 rebounds and 2 steals. The Lady Cats had 20 turnovers and shot only 37% from the field.
The Wildcats trailed the Eagles, 22 – 13, at the end of the first period, and saw the margin increase to 15 by the half, 39 – 24. They fell by the final score of 79 – 42. Seniors Tyler Moser and Ethan Camfield led the ‘Cats with 19 and 12 points respectively. Moser had 3 boards, a block, a steal, and 3 assists, while Camfield had 4 rebounds and a steal. Jesse Dixon came off the bench to score 4 points and had a rebound. Cooper Shamer hit for 3 points and had an assist, and Austin Whitson and Justice Bell each scored 2 points. Whitson had 2 rebounds, while Bell had 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Ryder Butler had a rebound, a steal, and an assist, and Eli McClain had 2 rebounds, a block, a steal, and an assist. Sayler Skelton had a rebound, and Avery Wilson had an assist. The ‘Cats had 26 turnovers and were out rebounded 36 – 17.
