Lakeway Christian announced Thad Wells, a former Virginia quality control assistant, as its football coach Friday.

Wells is the Lions' third  coach since the program began playing varsity football in 2020.

Prior to Virginia, Wells coached four high schools teams across South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia from 2014-20. He led Blacksburg High School to a Virginia state championship in 2016 and has never had a losing record as a head coach.

“I am thrilled to welcome Coach Wells and his family to Lakeway. Coach Wells brings a proven track record on and off the field,” said Kevin Cline, Lakeway Christian Head of Schools, in a release. “I am confident Coach Wells will build a successful program, but I am thankful and thrilled that he will invest in our student athletes’ faith and character.”

Wells replaces Steve Haywood, who resigned after one season. Jermel Jones resigned after the 2020 season. The school originally hired Bruce Fowler in 2018, but resigned before he ever coached a varsity game.

The Lions' football varsity program was established in 2020, and 2021 was their first season as a part of the TSSAA.

Haywood led Lakeway Christian to a 4-7 record and a 1-3 record in the Division II-A East region. The Lions went 1-6 in 2020.
