Nashville area boys basketball rankings: East Nashville, East Robertson win state titles

Here’s a look at the final top 10 Nashville-area large and small class boys high school basketball teams, as ranked by The Tennessean.

The small class poll includes teams include teams in Classes 1A-2A and Division II-A while the large class poll includes teams in Classes 3A-4A and Division II-AA.

Large Class

1. Brentwood Academy (29-1): The Eagles lost to Knoxville Catholic 63-55 in the Division II-AA semifinals. Last week: No. 2.

2. Cane Ridge (25-7):Brandon Miller's 30 points weren't enough to complete the comeback for the Ravens in a 69-67 loss to Bearden in the Class 4A state quarterfinals. Last week: No. 1.

3. Lebanon (29-7): The Blue Devils beat Clarksville for their first state tournament win in 22 years but lost to Bearden 62-44 in the Class 4A state semifinals. Last week: No. 4.

4. Clarksville (26-3): JJ Wheat finished his career with 20 points in a 62-57 loss to Lebanon in the Class 4A state quarterfinals. Last week: No. 3.

5. Beech (34-2): The Buccaneers free-throw shooting woes doomed them against Bartlett as they missed 12 in a 64-59 Class 4A state quarterfinals loss. Last week: No. 5.

6. Lipscomb Academy (18-13): The Mustangs lost to Christian Brothers 58-52 in the Division II-AA semifinals. Last week: No. 6.

7. Coffee County (24-10): After a close first half, the Red Raiders struggled in the second losing to Dobyns Bennett 66-52 in the Class 4A state quarterfinals. Last week: No. 7.

8. Ravenwood (23-10): The Raptors lost to Beech 54-49 in their Class 4A sectional matchups. Last week: No. 8.

9. Independence (25-10): The Eagles lost to Lebanon 65-57 in their Class 4A sectional matchup. Last week: No. 9.

10. Stewarts Creek (18-12): The Red Hawks lost to Coffee County 57-50 in their Class 4A sectional matchup. Last week: No. 10.

Small Class

1. East Nashville (29-3) — Jaylen Jones was named the Class 1A state tournament MVP after averaging 14.7 points including a game-high 20 points in the Eagles' 72-55 win over Milan for the Class 2A championship. Last week: No. 1.

2. Goodpasture (29-6) — The Cougars lost to FACS 48-42 in the Division II-A championship. Last week: No. 2.

3. East Robertson (27-6) — Taylor Groves  averaged 26 points in three games to lead East Robertson to the Class 1A title and its first state championship in 33 years. Last week: No. 5.

4. Clay County (24-7) — Grant Strong scored 25 points to lead the Bulldogs past North Greene in the quarterfinals but struggled in a 51-43 loss to Peabody in the Class 1A state semifinals. Last week: No. 4.

5. York Institute (24-8) — A 38-point game from Milan's Jodarius Robinson was too much for the Dragons to overcome in a 62-55 Class 2A quarterfinals loss. Last week: No. 3.

6. Clarksville Academy (23-13) — The Cougars lost to FACS 57-32 in the Division II-A state semifinals. Last week: No. 6.

7. USN (21-10)  — The Tigers' season came to an end with a 60-52 loss to Goodpasture in the Division II-A semifinals. Last week: No. 7.

8. Summertown (27-7) — Gavin Burleson and Grayson Burleson combined to score 44 points in a 70-52 loss to East Nashville in the Class 2A state semifinals. Last week: No. 8.

9. Jackson County (23-8) — The Blue Devils lost to East Nashville 69-32 in their Class 2A sectional matchup. Last week: No. 9.

10. Santa Fe (25-6): The Wildcats lost to West Carroll 54-52 in their Class 1A sectional matchup. Last week: No. 10.
