FIRST TEAM

The first six members of The Tennessean's All-Midstate boys high school wrestling team are nominees for the boys wrestler of the year. The winners will be announced at the Middle Tennessee High School Sports Awards presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans of Tennessee. Calvin Eason

Father Ryan, Sr.

Weight class: 120 pounds

Why chosen: Eason (23-2) won his first TSSAA Division II individual championship by decision. His title came after third-place finishes in 2019 and 2021.

Sammy Shires

Rossview, Sr.

Weight class: 138 pounds

Why chosen: Shires (55-0) completed an undefeated season with his first Class AA state championship, winning the title by decision. He previously had three third-place finishes at state.

Aidan Brenot

Clarksville, Jr.

Weight class: 160 pounds

Why chosen: Brenot (36-3) won his first Class AA state title, winning the championship by pin. His title comes a year after being runner-up.

Mt. Juliet, Sr.

Weight class: 170 pounds

Why chosen: Pyron (33-0) won his first Class AA state title, winning the championship by decision. He finished third a season ago.

Rob Atwood

Trousdale County, So.

Weight class: 195 pounds

Why chosen: Atwood (26-2) won the school's first state wrestling championship, winning the title by pin.

Gabe Fisher

MBA, Jr.

Weight class: 220 pounds

Why chosen: Fisher (31-0) won his second straight Division II state title at 220 pounds, winning the championship by pin.

Why chosen: Calvin (23-5) finished second in Division II, losing in the championship match by decision.

Why chosen: Ford (32-8) finished second in Class AA, losing in the championship match by decision. He was a third-place finisher in 2021.

Casen Roark

Weight class: 126 pounds

Why chosen: Roark (35-5) won his first Division II championship by decision in overtime.

Landon Desselle

Weight class: 132 pounds

Why chosen: Desselle (53-2) finished third in the Class AA state tournament, pinning his opponent in the third-place match.

Finley Jameson

Summit, Jr.

Weight class: 145 pounds

Why chosen: Jameson (48-8) finished second in the Class AA state championships, losing by pin. He finished sixth at state as a freshman.

Matt Oberlander

Weight class: 152 pounds

Why chosen: Oberlander (34-11) finished third in the Division II state tournament, winning by pin in the third-place match.

Why chosen: Chew (41-4) won his first Class AA state championship, winning the title by decision.

Why chosen: Gonzales (38-0) won her second straight state championship, winning by decision. 

Roseanna Vaughn

Clarksville Northwest, Sr.

Weight class: 120 pounds

Why chosen: Vaughn (28-2) won her second consecutive state championship, winning this season's title by decision.

Verena Pate

St. Andrew's Sewanee, Jr.

Weight class: 126 pounds

Why chosen: Pate (25-2) won her first state championship, winning by decision in the title match. The championship comes two seasons after finishing runner-up.

Kaylen Thomas

Ravenwood, Sr.

Weight class: 132 pounds

Why chosen: Thomas (28-3) won her first state championship, winning the title by pin.

Brooklyn Long

Independence Jr.

Weight class: 138 pounds

Why chosen: Long (22-0) won her first state championship, winning the title by pin. Her championship comes a year after finishing third.

Why chosen: White (17-1) finished third in the state championships, winning the third-place match by pin. It marks the third time she's placed at state after finishing runner-up in 2019 and 2021.

Genesis Gilmore

Weight class: 152 pounds

Why chosen: Gilmore (26-3) finished state runner-up, falling in the championship by pin. She was also runner-up in 2020 and third in 2021.

Brette Spink

Clarksville Northwest, Sr.

Weight class: 165 pounds

Why chosen: Spink (20-1) finished state runner-up, falling in overtime. She had previously finished third the past two years.

Ariyanna Anderson

Why chosen: Price led Rossview to the first TSSAA girls duals state championship in state history, beating city rival Clarksville in the championship. The duals title came in the first state-sanctioned girls duals state tournament in the country.
